Bring Dreams To Reality

How To Bring Dreams To Reality
By Annette Colby

STEPS TO ACHIEVING YOUR DREAM

Having a Dream . . . a Passion . . . a Vision . . . is like having a reason for living — a reason for being. Our dreams provide a strong sense of purpose and the motivation to great each new day with enthusiasm.

The dreams we truly desire for ourselves are how we create life. The time arrives in all lives to create a new potential. We may ignore the signs, but they are there. They can be felt inside when the body constantly tells us we’re not happy, we don’t feel good, we don’t have enough love or spirit flowing through us.

The life currently being led, the available levels of joy and abundance, were created from one set of beliefs, thoughts and strategies. We’ve outgrown an old way of being. Another potential reality can be created if we are ready to cultivate new beliefs, thoughts and strategies.

To do so requires willingness to take ourselves on an adventure into the unknown.

Can the secrets of achieving dreams be broken down into a series of steps? Well, it isn’t always as simple and neat as a set of defined steps, but there is a general process for success:

DREAM FROM THE HEART.

The imagination is the place from which we begin. From imagination born within the core, we are the catalysts of possibility. The life we wish to live can only be imagined by self, can only be created by self. It is inspired by the passions, desires, feelings and intuitions existing within.

The body is the guide leading us into alignment with living a potential higher then the one currently being lived. We dare to believe a better life exists outside the beliefs which form our comfort circle. We dare curiosity, adventure and the risk of finding out if angry lions, tiger and bears really do or do not live outside the boundaries of the comfort circle.

Every human being has the ability to paint a new life. We are the canvas, the paint and the paintbrush of our life. If we don’t like the way we feel in the life already painted, it is time to pick up the paintbrush and paint a new life. We don’t need to know exactly all the details of what a new life would look like.

Start somewhere. Begin with a feeling of excitement. Bring decisiveness and willingness to the canvas. The rest begins to unfold.

We can begin painting the doorway to a new and better life. A life in which we feel good. Only self can begin to imagine what feeling good would look like. If it’s unknown, guess. Pretend. Make something up. We get to paint an entire new life and do it poorly.

If it turns out not looking and feeling quite as expected, we’re still holding the paintbrush and the paint. We can adjust, modify, paint over something not quite right. Of course, the choice is always available to begin again.

Set aside some time to reconnect with your heart’s dream. What has been placed on the back burner that now can be brought forward? These dreams are the ones we want for ourselves — not for our spouse, not our family, not anyone else. Ours alone. When we let other people determine our definition of success, we sabotage our own future.

Dreams and desires bring excitement and life to our body. We learn how to stay focused on what is wanted, how to remain in a place of feeling good. We learn how to connect with spirit, bring spirit into the body, how to fill ourselves with power.

We are here to create. To do this, dreams must have excitement and importance. They are not going to be easy to achieve, and an internal leader must be able to refocus on the vision when times get tough or obstacles are encountered.

DECISION.

Decide to achieve this. This may seem basic but many people never decide and commit fully to their dream. They simply keep “thinking” about it. Or the first obstacle appears and they give up. Make a commitment to self that this is what is wanted. Right now is not the time to worry about how to make it happen. This is the moment of developing an internal leader who will carry the vision and come back to it time after time.

Honor the commitment to self. No one can let us down more than we can. Make a commitment about what is wanted and choose to honor and stand behind it 100 percent. No matter how challenging, how fearful, or overwhelming it may seem, decide you are going for it! Why? For no other reason than because you want it — no should’s, have to’s, or weak choices. Decide and commit.

What do I want to have?

How will I generate daily feelings of excitement around this dream?

What am I prepared to do to maintain excitement even in the face of doubt and discouragement?

BELIEF.

Believe in the outcome of the dream. We may have no idea how to get what is wanted, but it is essential that we believe, ultimately, we will have what is wanted. We don’t need to know exactly what to do. The first steps are acknowledging the dream, being excited by the dream, developing a committed relationship with the dream and believing we are worthy of having it.

Use affirmations, pictures, positive thinking, motivational tapes, prayer, self-love, visualization and whatever it takes, to reaffirm this dream and the belief we can have what we want. Using these techniques daily is required to slowly, but surely, change thinking patterns, create new beliefs and give dreams momentum.

It’s okay to have fear. Fear often means we are headed in the right direction. The fear signals that this is something that is wanted. It’s just that we don’t know how to get what we want, so fears pop up to stop us from risking failure. Acknowledge fear as part of the journey.

VISION.

Great achievers have a habit. They “see” things. They walk around with pictures of what they are wanting to create. They already see themselves as having what they want. Everything starts out with a dream. Visualize success. See the light at the end of the tunnel before even starting. Create an inner dialog of success and allow self to already feel the feelings of achievement.

Imagine the difference between these two scenarios. The first person, Gail, walks around with a clear vision of herself having already achieved her goals. Multiple times each day, she pulls up her dream and spends time with the physical excitement of imagining a successful outcome.

Each day she speaks loving words to herself, and leads herself with strength, kindness and compassion. She plays with her dream, offering it a relationship of love. When obstacles occur, she may fall flat, but at some point her internal leader remembers the vision. Her focus and attention are drawn back to feeling good combined with what is wanted.

A second person, Ben, hasn’t yet developed he ability to hold strong to a vision. The first obstacle comes along and knocks him flat on the ground. Ben stays there, accepting his defeat. His dream is buried as decides the failure is proof he can’t have what he wants. His inner dialog is self-critical.

He feels frustration, anger, discouragement, disgust and the hopelessness of “What’s the point?” Both Gail and Ben are going to run into obstacles. Both will meet with disappointment, fear, failure and other obstacles. There is no avoiding them. Who is more likely to achieve their dreams, Gail or Ben?

ACTION.

Decide where you are at now, and what seems like the right place to begin. Action means starting at the right place at the right time. Action steps may mean first spending time imagining what is wanted, what a joyful life would look like.

Action steps may require writing the dream, defining meaningful positive affirmations, allowing time each day to visualize the dream, adding exciting emotions to the dream, or breaking down an overwhelming change into smaller, manageable steps. It might take weeks or even months of doing these steps before we are ready to move on to the next level of action.

ENJOY THE PROCESS!

Each person has within them individual ideas of what is exciting. An exciting idea does not come from left brain logic. It comes from deep within, from center. It has no logical basis. It is an idea of creation. An exciting idea which brings more life, more energy. Perhaps our ideas lie in the creation of a flower garden, a home redecorating project, a self-initiated business or the physical embodiment of spirit.

The size of the desire is irrelevant. Relevance lies within excitement. Does the idea stir up passion, bring more life, bring a twinge of awakening? Our purpose to stay true to inner desires, come back as often as possible to the excitement of carrying those dreams. We allow ourselves to intentionally feel good, right now, even as the dream is but an illusionary reverie.

Remember no one is making you do this. This is your dream for yourself. Other people may support us, and then again, they may not. Remember, it is not their dream and not their obligation to make it happen for us. We have to believe in our dream, summon the excitement for ourselves, stay true to the process of creation.

Creating our dream will require much effort, emotionally, spiritually and physically, to get what is waned. Fall in love with the journey itself — not just the outcome. Fall in love with yourself for having a dream.

POSITIVE NOTES

I dare to dream of a new life.
I dare to stay true to my dream.
I dare to feed excitement my dream and my body.

Who's Showing You The Ropes?

Why You Need A Mentor
By Jason Johns

Years ago, I decided I wanted to play the guitar. Keen and eager, I rushed out and bought a guitar, amplifier, effects pedals and a few books. I got it all home, plugged it all in and then made a noise that sounded like a herd of cats all caterwauling out of tune.

After some days and weeks of struggling and irritating my family I decided that I needed to learn properly. The best way to learn properly is to get someone who is already an expert to teach you.

So I went out, found someone who was an expert guitarist in the style I wanted to learn and studied with them. I also watched my favourite guitarists playing; watching exactly how they played and moved their hands. I, of course, copied them (though I now realise it’s called modelling!).

With an expert teaching me, I soon became much better at the guitar and was no longer banished from the house when I wanted to play.

I could probably have taught myself guitar from books and from fiddling with the guitar, but it would have taken me a lot longer than it otherwise did. Through using a mentor, I sped up the learning process and avoided a lot of the pitfalls, bad habits and mistakes many self taught guitarists pick up along the way.

Later on in life, I worked as a consultant for a large computer corporation. Again, I was learning the ropes and was given a mentor; an expert who already knew the system and the company. My mentor advised and guided me through my career as a consultant. He saved me a lot of trouble and made me aware of all the loopholes in the companies processes and procedures, which helped me get more pay rises and a better company car!

Whatever area of your life you want to develop in, it is important that you have a mentor. Whether this is in your career, your personal life, your business or your hobbies. A mentor can speed up the learning process and help you to become the expert and success you want to be.

So how do you find a mentor?

Well, you may know someone who is already an expert and could approach them and ask them. You could join forums on the Internet and find experts there (though check their credentials first). Search for websites of people in the area you want to learn from. You may find they have books to help you or even provide a one to one coaching service. You can also read biographies and auto-biographies of people you want to learn from and model them.

Sometimes you may have to pay a mentor, whether with money or through providing them some service or help. Other times people will be happy to mentor you for free just to help you out. When you become an expert you too may want to give something back and mentor other people.

If you are looking for a business mentor, then often local chambers of commerce provide mentors free of charge. Professional bodies will often be able to put you in touch with a mentor too.

A mentor will save you a lot of time and effort in the long run, and it is well worth your time and effort to find one to shorten your learning curve. Whatever area of your life you are working on, business, personal or pleasure, find yourself a mentor to help propel you forwards to the level of success you desire.

Life's Not So Tough!

Accept It, Life's Not So Tough!
By Rodger Ruge

Life is about self-discovery. The paths we choose in life, the experiences that shape and mold our future, all lead us ultimately to define who and what we are. We hope this process is a constant evolution and that we are constantly challenging ourselves to achieve higher levels of personal growth.

But do you really believe in yourself?

For some, their role in life seemed preordained from birth. You know the type of person I'm talking about. Those few who just seem to fit perfectly into whatever they have chosen to do. The role they are playing, whatever that is, is natural, flawless.

For these people everything in life seems quite literally to be second nature. Flowing like water past every form of resistance, seemingly guided by some force beyond our understanding, their success in life is effortless. Why is this so for some and not for others? Why do most of us struggle?

Have you ever considered your grandest vision of who and what you wish to become? Do you really know what your role in this life should be? Have you fully accepted yourself and the path you have chosen? Without acceptance of who and what we are it is impossible to achieve any measure of success.

It has been my observation that the one thing that holds us back is our lack of acceptance. No tricks, no magic, just a true resolve and belief in reaching whatever goal we have set for ourselves. The problem is we are often steeped in the fear of failure. It is this fear that keeps us from acceptance and success.

I will tell you that I was not one of those people who found everything in life easy to achieve. My path has always been difficult. I've had many struggles and many failures in my life. I've had to work harder than most at everything I've ever attempted because I was lacking the one critical element I needed to move beyond my self-induced limitations.

I struggled because of a fear that I was not worthy to fulfill my destiny. This fear caused me to be unable to accept the grandest vision of myself.

It has taken me many years of introspection to conquer this fear and overcome the lack of belief in myself. However, once I began to practice acceptance, to allow myself to believe in my inner strength, the quality of my life changed dramatically. Suddenly I had limitless potential and the results have been profound.

Acceptance boosted my self-confidence. With this new found gift I experienced a large growth in my abilities. I was able to cast aside feelings of inadequacy and an ego shrouded in fear, by simply accepting my grandest vision of myself.

I have accepted my skills, my abilities and my natural gifts. I believe in myself! I believe in my limitless potential.

If you really want to begin to improve the qualtiy of your life then make a resolution to begin right now practicing the power of acceptance.

Accept yourself, your talents, your gifts and your abilities. Everyday, reflect on your amazing talents and skills.

Stop limiting yourself and start believing in your inner strength and you too will find that life is not so tough!

It's Never Too Late . . .

It's Never Too Late for Time Management
By Ann-Marie Latoski

There is always enough time to get everything done, and everything always gets done on time. Really!

I have been involved in numerous projects and deliverables, from large product launches to presentations on business cases, strategies, policies, etc. Many a time, I sat and watched others scurry, scramble, and fret over the timeline.

Meanwhile, I left the office at the usual time or not too long after – certainly when I chose to. I’d hear the next day about the Herculean efforts of those working into the wee hours of the night to get things done. I used to wonder what was wrong with me.

I began to justify myself (to myself). I’m very organized. I can get to the heart of it. I focus my attention. I do my work when I’m in the office and don’t spend time socializing. Not too long ago, I realized there was more to it than some talent that I alone possessed.

I began to consciously know that things would get done when they needed to, and I allowed it to happen. I knew wherever I ended up at the end of the day was where I needed to be. Things were getting completed faster. If I knew I had to finish a proposal before a meeting, I would be done exactly on time.

I felt very free, and even a little guilty, looking at everyone else still stressing over their workload.

I believe everyone can feel this freedom. It starts by knowing yourself, knowing your work, then thinking, feeling and acting differently. We are each unique in the strengths we possess and the role we play. Once we have our goals and know our priorities it comes together when needed.

More often than not, it does get done on time, meaning when it is required or in a time that suits the larger project. If we change our definition of “on time” to reflect need rather than dates, we take the pressure off, and generally improve the quality of what is delivered.

Are you going to tell me about the time your report was late? Late by whose definition? It got there when it got there. What about the time you missed a meeting? What did you really miss? Was it anything that couldn’t be made up? What about the presentation you had to give? Well, you delivered what you had, didn’t you?

What happened the day you were sick, or on vacation? Did the office continue to function? What about the time you worked overtime and/or overboard to deliver something, only to have it sit unused by the recipient for another day or week? What truly were the consequences? Were you and others able to adjust? I’ll bet you were.

Our shifted perception gives us flexibility and a level of confidence in our ability to do our jobs. This self-assurance allows us to work in the moment - the true key to effective use of time. When we aren’t distracted by:

- an external influence such as a neighbor or the “you’ve got mail” signal, or

- the internal sabotage of what we were last working on, or have to do next, we have infinite space in the moment to concentrate on what we are doing.

So know yourself, know your role, and your tasks, prioritize accordingly, then set yourself up for success. Live and work in the present, and let the future take care of itself and you’ll find it all gets done on time.

Moving Towards Or Against . . .

Towards Or Against Your Desires?
By John Halderman

Are you moving towards or against what you want?

Every action you take supports something, some result.

The question is - are you taking the actions that support the results you would rather have in your life?

If not, are they supporting something opposite of what you want or are they neutral? Either way they are not supporting your desires.

If you have all the same thousands of thoughts tomorrow as you did yesterday -- you will be the same as yesterday.

Us humans have the type of brains that we have for a reason, so that we can change our lives. We don't need to keep doing and living the same over and over.

To get anywhere, a group of small steps put together in the same direction lead you to your destination. But if your thoughts and behaviors do not lead down the path of your desire, where are you going? You will at least be delayed by the inconsistency of your actions or even halt any progress all together.

There is always a reaction to every action, everything you think and do leads to something. Is it what you want or not? What you live with now is the result of previous thoughts and actions.

Everything is perpetuated when you continue to take the same actions.

So, desiring something different is great, but you need to adjust your thinking and your actions in order for anything to be different.

In order to see and live something different, you must gradually take more action towards what you want and less against. You will always be supporting something, which will it be?

The way to begin change is to take a look at what you are doing each day and make appropriate adjustments that support your desires. If you leave this up to, 'when I think about it', you will soon forget about it.

To succeed, set up a small system to interact with on a daily basis, something you can schedule and plan into your day, something you will be more likely to get into a routine with, something to interact with, utilizing more of your senses.

Take the time to think about what you did and what you thought about, at the end of each day.

With this you begin to see that you have a choice over your thoughts and actions rather than continuing to let everything be automatic.

Write your discoveries down and analyze them - do they help move you towards or against the life you want?

You can do this at the end of the day just before going to bed or first thing in the morning. Do what works for you. If you find you can't remember enough in the morning, better do it at night.

Don't let frustration with failure to immediately change get you to stop your efforts. At first you might automatically revert back to how you have done it before, as this is your habit. And habits want to remain as they are. You must be persistent.

At first you may not even notice that you have not changed your action until when you sit down to analyze the day. After as while you will begin to notice during the day whether you have reverted back or stayed on track. At some point you will catch yourself as you are doing what you don't want to do, and then you become aware just before you do it, enabling yourself to choose to do it differently.

Stick with it. Small daily adjustments in how you think and act can lead to huge changes in your life if you persist. Failure never meant stop, it means - try again!

Changing your life to be how you envision usually does not happen with one large event; rather it is the compilation of small changes you make in your thinking and action.

Remember action - reaction? Doing something towards change once in a while will give you once in awhile results.

Start with something small and not very emotionally charged and you will find that your small successes will lead to more confidence and determination enabling you to increase your personal power over your habits.

Personal growth is your responsibility - you decide to go towards or against what you really want each day.

Break Through Procrastination

Procrastination Breakthrough: If You Intend to Do It, Do It Now!
By Bill Marshall

If there is one quality that successful people have, it is a bias towards taking positive action. Once they reach a decision that they are going to do something, they take action. And they take it fast. They don't beat around the bush.

They have trained themselves to avoid procrastination like the plague. Whether it's writing an article, doing their taxes, getting organized, or making a purchase, once they decide to do something, they take some kind of immediate action.

This does not mean that they are rash. They think through their decisions. But once the decision has been made, they know it's time for intelligent action at the soonest possible opportunity.

Some years ago, I read a self-help book (I think it may have been one of the lesser known titles by Napoleon Hill), where the author explored the virtues of adopting the motto: Do it now! Since then, I've used it almost daily to great effect. Of course, you can't do everything "now" -- wouldn't that be great! But when you recognize that a goal is important, there is almost always something you can do within a very short period of time.

Recently, it occurred to me that some people may find the "do it now" mantra a bit too pushy. Some people may think that it implies that they should take action without thinking. As I mention in the previous paragraph, that's certainly not the case. So, to gain wider acceptance of this idea, I've added the phrase "if you intend to do it..."

What this really means is that if you have gone through the decision making process, and you have decided to take action--then just get started. As soon as you get started, you begin to build momentum. Once you build momentum, you find yourself taking one step after another in the direction of your goal.

If you persist long enough (whether a few minutes, or a few years if it is a big goal), you will eventually reach the end destination: the attainment of the goal.

Here is an important thought: all we really have is now. Yesterday is gone forever. All you can profitably get from yesterday is to learn from it. Tomorrow (even the next moment) is only a promise. You can plan for tomorrow (and you should!), but you can't act in that moment until it arrives.

There is one, and only one moment in which you can live and act. And that moment is now.

So, take in the relevant facts. Go through an intelligent decision making process. But once you have reached the point where you "intend" to take action, then get started as quickly as possible and follow the task through to completion.

Do this consistently and the odds that you will achieve great success will significantly improve.

Pick And Choose

But I'm Already Doing the Best I Can!
By Kim-Marie Ward

Can you count how many self-help or motivational articles you've read, or how many books you've purchased or borrowed on the subject? Have you tried self-help seminars, maybe even ordered videos or the complete CD set sold by the latest and greatest motivational guru?

Yet, even with all that storehouse of knowledge, and all the effort you can manage, nothing has changed. You haven't found your dream job, taken that exotic vacation, become rich beyond your wildest dreams and your family isn't as bonded and beautiful as the smiling families at the end of one of those reality nanny shows.

It can be frustrating and leave you feeling even worse about yourself than you did before, because now you have the added guilt of having failed at one more "sure-fire" method to becoming your elusive ideal.

But maybe it isn't you - at least, not from your current perspective.

Have you ever noticed in restaurants, how the dishes are all the same size, no matter who orders the meals? A waif-like woman will receive a plate of food filled with exactly the same proportions as the tall, muscular construction worker at the next table. When the wait staff comes to clear their plates, they may find she's only eaten half of her meal. "Is there anything wrong?" the waiter might ask. "Oh, no," she'll reply and pat her stomach delicately. "I'm just full."

At the next table, the construction worker has not only cleaned his plate, but he's eaten all the breadsticks, the appetizer, and he's asking for a dessert menu as he's eyeing his date's dinner with obvious menu-envy.

Does this mean that the waif should feel like a failure because she wasn't able to eat all the food? Should the construction worker feel like a failure because he's still hungry? Of course not, and you know that, but the concept is too often forgotten when it comes to measuring personal success.

One size does not fit all. It isn't true of pantyhose, restaurant meals, diets, prescriptions, hobbies, or any host of things. And the "one size fits all" approach is definitely not true for sure-fire success programs either.

The next time you decide to try a new motivational program or self-help seminar, or even revisit one that you have an inkling could work for you, keep one thing in mind: One size does NOT fit all.

By all means, listen to what the coaches or instructors have to say, and learn as much as you can, but don't put unnecessary pressure on yourself if some of those great ideas don't fit you or your lifestyle.

Modify. Take what works for you from this program, and something that worked from that program, keeping track in a journal or in a computer file. Implement those things that are workable, that make you feel better about yourself, or that give you enough incentive to take on a little more.

Develop your own methods from the lessons you've learned. Over time - weeks, months, years (only you can know the pace that's right for you) - you'll see that you've developed a program that truly works for you.

And who knows? You may be the next great motivational guru and we'll all be racing out to buy your books, CDs, and videos.

Or best case scenario, you'll come to know yourself a little better and when that happens, you begin to accept yourself as you are and when you find yourself saying "I'm doing the best I can," it'll be evident.

Instead of that little phrase feeling like a cry of failure, it'll be a statement of your success.

*The suggestions here refer to motivational and success types of programs. Diet, exercise, mental wellness, or any programs requiring an expert's care should be followed according to the advice given by those professionals. This is not to be construed as medical advice.

Stop, Look, And Listen . . .

Stop All That Doing! (Take An Action Vacation)
By Jamee Tenzer

Do you secretly thrive on keeping a lot of balls in the air? Is your success measured in part by how much is accomplished on any given day? Do the endorphins flow when appreciative friends and family ask; “how do you do it all?!”

If so, your practical approach to action is one of your strong suits. You make plans. You make lists. You think ahead. Let’s face it, you make things happen. Whether you are writing holiday cards in October, creating a 5-year plan for your business or taking your vitamins daily, you are employing your gift for doing.

You, my friend, are a “do-er.”

But what happens when your talent for doing stops working in a particular area? Instead of moving ahead at your usual speed, you find that your efforts are mysteriously thwarted. Instead of shifting easily into drive, you are stuck in neutral.

Or, the nightmare scenario, you find yourself in reverse! If you are used to achieving results on a regular basis, you may get mentally immobilized when your attempts to move forward, begin to fail.

When this happens, our sense of focus gets fuzzy and our momentum is suddenly out of sync. In my coaching practice and in my own life, I have found that when this happens, it is not because I have failed to do enough. It is because doing has become a habit instead of a tool. This is a sign that it is time to take a breath, take a break and take an Action Vacation.

Before I continue, I should tell you that taking action is at the very core of my coaching practice and at the center of my motto; Inspiration/Action/Success. In my experience, if we are willing to identify and take action toward a stated goal, we will eventually achieve that goal or another more desirable one.

Action is one of the most powerful tools we have at our disposal and I spend a good portion of my practice, coaching my clients to take action even if they are not sure it is the right action. Any action creates energy and out of that energy, possibilities and options abound.

So, given my enthusiasm for action, why would I be suggesting that you take a break from taking action? I am suggesting this because there are times when the only way to move forward is to stop, temporarily. And it’s not as easy as it may seem. For some of us, perpetual motion is like a cozy sweater we cannot live without or a big mug of hot chocolate on a wintry evening. We are so comfortable in motion, that we don’t notice when what we are doing is not working.

Even when we are faced with exhaustion and failure, we refuse to stop and rest. We just do more! Why? Because, we know that in the past, checking off that list has worked and so we trudge onward, hoping for a better result. Like the Energizer Bunny, we “keep on going” and getting nowhere.

So, how do we untangle this snarled ball of string? It can be tricky, because inherent in the do-er makeup, is a desire to create structure, goals and a framework for daily life. Dropping everything, giving up or moving to a mountain top is not going to solve the problem for us or relieve the anxiety that we feel.

That is why the Action Vacation solution works on a number of different levels. It has a beginning, middle and end. It involves making a plan. And, it yields results.

Here is the 10-step process that you can implement when it is time for a much-deserved Action Vacation.

1. At the top of a blank piece of paper write down the one thing that is not getting done or moving forward no matter how hard you try or how much you do about it. This may be a goal, a process, a relationship shift or any other “problem,” that is stuck.

2. Write a list of everything you have done about the problem.

3. Take a moment to sit back and appreciate and acknowledge yourself for how hard you have worked.

4. Then take a moment to acknowledge that your best efforts have not created the result you want in this area.

5. Write down anything that is still left to do about the issue. Maybe you could do more of what you have been doing, or try something again. Make sure you get all the ideas out of your head and onto a piece of paper. Set it aside.

6. Commit to an Action Vacation. Decide how much time is appropriate based on the issue. It may be 1 week, 1 month, a day or even an hour.

7. Take a moment and close your eyes. Visualize putting the problem inside a balloon. Let the balloon go and watch it fly away taking the problem with it.

8. The hardest part of the Action Vacation is dealing with the little voice inside your head. We all have a little voice, an ongoing commentary about our life and decisions. The little voice does not go on vacation and it doesn’t want you on vacation either. It may want you to start doing things again. It has been trained to do, remember?

The voice may tell you that it is the wrong time for an Action Vacation or that the problem will get worse if you stop working on it. When that voice speaks to you, it is ok to listen, but remember it is operating from fear.

Remind the voice that you are on an Action vacation, and you will focus on that issue as soon as the vacation is over. You may have to do this a number of times before the voice begins to fade. You are re-training your mind.

9. During the vacation, you may have new ideas, thoughts and perspectives about your issue. That is great. Write them down but don’t do anything about them.

10. When the Action Vacation is over, take a look at the issue again. Evaluate it and notice if anything has changed. Review any new ideas that you thought of during your vacation and take a look at the list you made in step #5.

On a new piece of paper, write down the issue, and make a list of action steps that you can take. This is your new game plan and now you are in your element. Start crossing off that list.

We are so lucky. We have been given a toolbox for taking action in life and the ability to use it. Our lists and plans are usually not a burden, but an opportunity to do what we do best and utilize our strengths.

However, when we find that satisfaction has been replaced by confusion, stress, anxiety and hopelessness, an Action Vacation is food for the “doing” soul.

Interesting Viewpoint . . .

I thought I would post this article today, the author presents some interesting points. What do you think?

Why is Goal Setting NOT Working for Me?
By Richard Blair

There over 4,000,000 articles on goal setting on the internet, that’s 4 million. Yet with all this information available, people are still not getting it in their life. There must be something missing.

YOU CANNOT READ ALL 4 MILLION ARTICLES

Time restrains do not permit that. If you could find 3 or 4 with the best parts used to make one good treatise, you might up your odds. That’s kind of like the down and out street person looking for something in the garbage.

What is the missing link?

NUMBER ONE MISSING LINK

You must be totally honest, first to yourself, then to all others.

This is the most skipped over need in almost all goal setting articles. No you cannot use little white lies. You cannot scam your way to success, failure is always waiting for you at some turn in the road. All your efforts will be lost. You will be back at ground zero. You cannot build on shifting sand.

FACT NUMBER TWO

Do not be frivolous. Do not start asking for things that you do not really want.

It alright to ask for big things, but it is wise to work your way up to bigger things as you begin to taste the fruits of success. Small successes will reinforce your voyage on your way to bigger successes.

FACT NUMBER THREE

Everyone is using goal setting whether they know it, or whether they understand it or not.

Your sanity is preserved by the fact that your subconscious will lower your goals to a point where you will try to feel comfortable. Understand it or not, your very soul has this build in to help you survive, and maintain your sanity.

I repeat you are using goal setting now whether you know it or not. You just do not understand goal setting at a conscious level.

FACT NUMBER FOUR

A negative attitude will leave you dead in the water.

If you are serious about improving, you must continue a trial and error path, and realize failure is but a stepping stone to success.

If you can grasp this concept, you can begin to see the need for going slow until you feel goal setting working in your life.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
You can contact me at dickfoster1@verizon.net, I welcome all requests. I will, as soon as humanly possible respond to any and all request or comments.

Some gurus want to make this out to be a mystery, and put together a lengthy document to justify their price.

The more complicated equals more dollars for you to spend. I’m not saying these programs don’t work, but most don’t work for the average person. All 4,000,000 different sites can’t be right! Some are blatantly misleading and incorrect.

Old Me - New Me?

Before we get to today's message I just wanted to point out a great article on Solomon Broad's Blog, Articles For Success. The post is For Success in Life and Business Surround Yourself with These Five People. Now back to our regular programming . . .

Beliefs: Discover Consequences of "Old-Me-Dragon" Beliefs
By Johan Horak

"It's a funny thing about life: if you refuse anything but the very best you will often get it." - W. Somerset Maugham

"There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." William Shakespeare

A story about the old-me dragon and the new-me.

Peter get's up in the morning with a spinning head. There's a fight between the old-me dragon and the new - me.

New-me: "I will from today become the person I deserve to be."

Old-me dragon: "I can't do this. I'll look stupid."

New-me: "If they can do it, so can I."

Old-me dragon: "No. I am to old to learn new skills."

New-me: "So what..I know it will not be easy.. I prefer to be the person I deserve to be."

Old-me dragon: "No. You'll waste your time. Your family will not support you."

New-me: "I'll never know until I give it a try."

Who will win?

The old-me Dragon plays the old "powerless and weakening" tape beliefs over and over. Old-me Dragon clutters up your ability to change your behaviors. And you need an escape from old-me beliefs.

"Man is what he believes." - Anton Chekov

If you agree with Anton then you can change.

The consequences of dragon - beliefs and habits.

1) Your dragon believes distort understanding of your power in the present.

It's human nature to follow the path of least resistance. No matter how great your ability, how large your genius, or how extensive your education, your achievement will never rise higher than your believes.

2) People who fail often stay focused on the pain instead of the gain.

Most people attempt change with a sense of dread and fear because they unconsciously believe the change will only be temporarily and all their efforts will be in vain.

3) "Only other special people have the ability top stop old habits."

You don't realize how you sabotage yourself by this attitude of self-deprecation or self-effacement.

Escape from these limiting old me dragon beliefs and habits.

1) Give yourself permission to believe in yourself - one of the greatest gifts you have.

2) To change your beliefs - envision the rewards you have to gain from creating a positive habit. You need a crystal clear picture. Write down at least three or more specific reason why you want to change a bad habit.

3) You can have the same feeling of mastery by eliminating a bad habit.

Mastering your new beliefs are not exclusive to special people - you are special. You can feel great about the way you eat and the energy your body is charge with. You can look great when you look down at your fingernails and see attractive, healthy nails. You can feel great about going out to eat with friends and after dinner not needing that cigarette.

4) Reprogram your mind and bust any bad habit. You need to take charge of the caliber of information you feed your mind. You need to create a new and more empowering program.

You literally create a new path of least resistance - a new tape recording to replace the old dragon beliefs and habits.

And your subconscious will immediately start to act on the newer and stronger program, as it becomes common thought in your mind.

"Be the master of mind rather than mastered by the mind." -- Zen Saying

The Accountability Factor

5 Simple Steps to Make 2006 the Best Year Ever!
By Fracka Future

So how was your 2005? Was it by far the best year of your life? I mean over the top, you can’t wait for more? If you are like most people, you probably answered no.

If you had the choice of spending the same 365 days and just surviving it or having the best year of your life, which would you choose? Of course you would choose the best year of your life! You know what you would prefer, you always get the same 365 days each year, so what is getting in the way and how do we get it out of there?

First, let’s start with the question, how did you do on your Top 3 goals in 2005? Most people don’t even have a top one goal, let alone a history of what they did on their top 3 goals. Well, let’s turn that around right now.

Step 1: (Spend only 30 seconds on this. REALLY!) Pick your number one goal in each of the following categories. Physical, Financial, and Relationship. STOP! Do it now. We are talking only 30 seconds and then write the goals down.

If you had achieved these 3 goals in 2005, do you think 2005 would have been your best year ever? If you answer is anything but YES, redo Step 1 with bigger goals.

We have done it. In only 30 seconds. Can you believe it? Finally, you are starting your new year off with actual targets that will make your 2006 the best year ever.

How much better do you feel knowing you now have clear targets to go after? It kind of takes the anxiety out and allows you to get down to business. You know what you want, now let’s get you there with Steps 2 through 5. Remember, you have only 4 and ½ minutes left.

Step 2: Turn your Top 3 Goals into your Top 3 one year goals. If you can not complete your Top 3 Goals in one year, reduce them down to where you can complete them in one year. Make sure you don’t reduce them down to the point where they don’t inspire you, but just enough to make them one year goals.

Step 3: Choose 3 people to hold you accountable to your top 3 Goals, one person for each goal. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy. We jump from goal to goal never achieving any of them. Once you achieve one of your goals, the new ideas that you will start having will be 1000 times greater then the ideas you are having right now.

Just know that these goals you just wrote down ARE the ones that are truly important to you, because you were not given enough time to think about choosing them. They were already there.

Step 4: Get out a blank piece of paper. Choose one of the persons that will be holding you accountable. Write 'Dear . . .' at the top of the paper. Followed by. I, promise to consistently make progress on for the entire year of 2006 until it is achieved. I will give you monthly updates on my progress. Sign your name on the bottom. Do the same thing with your other 2 goals.

Step 5: Give those papers to the respective persons and post your goals in a location where you can review them daily. Update your new accountability buddies on your progress and look out 2006.

Congratulations on completing this exercise. I hope it took you 5 minutes or less. It is actually better the quicker you do it. It prevents all the second guessing that naturally takes place.

If you skipped over these exercises you will never understand their power. It’s like the difference between imagining you are standing at the edge of a cliff and actually standing at the edge of cliff.

Once you achieve any of your top 3 goals, you will be flooded by ideas that are 1000’s of times better than before you started on these goals. You can not imagine what you will have access to once you complete just one of these goals. Good luck on your best year ever!

Goal Achievement At It's Best!

Have a look at the Goals-2-Go Blog where they have blogged about a goal setter extraordinaire. This guy wrote down a bunch of goals when he was younger and . . . well I'll let you see for yourself. Totally blew me away when I read about him! Here it is:

World's # 1 Goal Achiever, John Goddard

It would be appropriate here to have an article on writing down your goals, don't you think? When you read the following article, think about what John Goddard might have been thinking when he made his list of goals.

You Gotta Have Goals!
By Robert Crutchfield

I’ve always found it interesting that a ship cannot be steered unless it is moving at a certain minimum speed. Those who navigate everything from small to massive ships call this “steerage.” Steerage is the exact point at which choosing a ship’s direction becomes possible.

Of course a ships’ pilot also has charts, other publications, and a variety of tools to help him know in great detail where the ship should go. As people, goals are what give momentum and motion to our movements, goals are how we know where to go, how far we have been, and how far we have yet to travel.

Goals are the human equivalent of the navigators charts, and tools.

Where do we get our goals ? The best goals come from within ourselves. Goals that come from external sources are rarely truly motivating, or effective. Goals also require some thought. Developing good, life changing goals requires digging deep into what really means anything to you, and what you genuinely want to accomplish.

I want to spend the rest of this article, discussing some things you should look for, in goals that will have true power in changing your life.

GOALS SHOULD BE ATTAINABLE

By attainable, I mean goals have to be realistic. After all goals are a tool to use in achieving success, they are not meant to be pipe-dreams ! Improving your sales 500% in the next year for example would be an example of an unrealistic goal. On the other hand a 20% sales increase, may be very much within your grasp.

GOALS SHOULD BE SET HIGH

Look at our previous example. A one year sales increase of 20% could look pretty good if last year sales, were flat. The same 20% increase in sales would look pretty pathetic if last year, sales doubled. Only goals that are set high will drive you to success.

Whatever you are trying to accomplish your goals should be set toward the top of what is possible, not the bottom. At the same time don’t be too hard on yourself, if you don’t always make it all the way to your goal. In fact if you always easily make your goals, I guarantee you aren’t setting them high enough!

GOALS MUST BE MEASURABLE

“I want to sell more widgets.” or “ I want more free time this year.” are powerless goals. “I want to spend 8 more hours a week with my family.” is an example of a goal with life changing power. It is specific, identifiable, and measurable. You in fact will be able to know the exact moment this goal is reached. What a rush!

Try this, show your goals to a mentor, coach, or colleague. If they can’t tell you exactly what you want to accomplish without further explanation, revise your goals.

GOALS MUST BE PERSONALLY MEANINGFUL

Making more money won’t drive you to success, if what your really want is more time with your family. Goals that matter mean more to you than anybody else. They are tied directly to what you want, to what makes you happy. If you cannot get absolutely passionate about your goals, if they don’t have you jumping out of bed in the morning, they’re wrong.

Other people may be able to define your goals if you let them, but they will never be able to define your true happiness. Without what makes you truly happy, you can never be truly successful.

GOALS SHOULD HAVE VARYING TIME HORIZONS

Powerful life changing goal making involves short, mid, and long term goals. Different people have different ideas on the time frames involved, but here is how I look it.

Short term goals can be accomplished this month. Mid term goals can be won within a year. Long term goals are things like earning a college degree, that can take more than a year to attain. Its also important that at least some of your short, and mid term goals build on each other to reach your long term goals.

GOALS NEED TO BE VISIBLE

Making goals will not do any good if they get shoved in a drawer, or buried on your hard drive somewhere. Make a list of your goals, and put them somewhere you will see them at least daily. Better yet put each goal on a separate index card, and post them all over the place so you will constantly be reminded, of one goal or another.

All of us take in way to much of other people’s garbage everyday. Why not counter this “negative programing” with reminders of what it it that you want ? Want to do even better ? Get yourself an “accountability partner.” Somebody you trust , and share your goals with. The best accountability partner would be somebody with similar goals.

If your really lucky you can find a mentor who has gotten what or where you want. In fact this does not even have to be a single individual. A support group, or personal “board of directors,” would have an even more profound, powerful impact on your ability to reach your goals.

GOALS NEED TO BE REGULARLY REVIEWED

Circumstances change, goals get achieved, new opportunities crop up. Beyond all this we can’t loose sight of the fact that goals are intended to keep you focused, motivated, and moving forward on those things you use to define your personal success. Short term goals should be reviewed at least monthly. All others need a good going over every 60-90 days.

CONCLUSION

Its nearly impossible to get what you want, unless you know where you are, where you are going, and how to get there. That’s why everybody needs goals. Good, powerful goals are the roadmap to your success, no matter how you choose to define it.

Believe me, nothing creates more powerful more life changing goals than beginning with what you want the most. Search your heart and figure out what that is. Find out what it takes to get there. Develop high, specific, meaningful, goals you can be passionate about daily. Then all you have to do is, go get it tiger !

Money Attitudes

How To Make Money
By Saleem Rana

Something that is never taught in all our years of education is how to make money. Yet this is a complex subject. Your life and well being depend on it.

The more you study of it, the more you will have of it. While it is not possible to talk in detail here about how to study money or the many ways that one can make money, it is possible to grasp the direction you need to take.

The starting point is to make a study of it. Then you have to practice what you have studied. It doesn’t matter where you begin your study—whether it is learning how to manage your money, or how to invest it, or how to create an enterprise that will begin to attract more money into your life.

Then you have to get rid of any money issues that you have — any subconscious blocks about it. If you don’t have enough money, there is some way that you are resisting having more and even repelling it. Since money is such an emotionally-charged subject, most people have huge resistance to getting more. While they claim to want it, they also hold contradictory and conflicting beliefs about money. You have to get clear that you want more money.

As in most things in life, you can’t get anywhere unless you take a position. You have to take a position in relationship to money. If you are trading stocks, you have to take a position—do you want to go long or short in a given market? If you hold a job, you have to take a position on it — do you want to rise in your company or look for another opportunity? If you are an entrepreneur, you have to take a position — what do I want to sell, to whom, and for how much?

The position is a point in space and time. The ideal space is here. The ideal time is now. In other words, you have to be fully present to your opportunity here and now. When you think of the past, you have to relate the events then to where you are now. When you think of the future, you have to relate the imagined events to where you are now.

Here and now, then, is your only point of power.

How do you get what you want? You have to do something. And in order to do something, you have to be something. This, then, creates what you have. If you do like a professional marketer, for example, then you will have the rewards of that profession. Similarly, if you do little or nothing, then you will have little or nothing.

Your action determines your results. And your actions spring from who you are as a person. You have what your actions bring you.

Who you are is actually a highly-intelligent and capable being, and if you come from that position of personal self-acceptance, then you will learn what to do, begin doing it, and start having more of what you want.

When you set your intention, you will perceive your vision in three-dimensions, and you will begin to act in ways that bring you more of what you want.

Do you see how simple it all is? Why then do people struggle with money? It is because they do not study and practice it; they do not have enough emotional clarity about money; they do not take a position in relationship to the marketplace; and, they do not believe that they are worthy, do not act, and, consequently, do not get what they want.

The Quitting Zone

The Quitting Zone
By Linda Anderson

Have you ever had a goal, worked really hard to achieve it, persevered through the ups and downs along the way, and then at some stage it all seems too hard and you doubt whether you will ever achieve the goal and so you give up?

This is "The Quitting Zone".

The funny thing about The Quitting Zone is that it almost always occurs just before you will succeed. The difficulty is that you cannot see that success is close ... hence why quitting seems like a great option at that point.

The Quitting Zone is a very common stage people go through when striving to achieve a challenging goal - so how do you pass through the Quitting Zone and get to the other side?

* Re-clarify - Take time out to remind yourself why you want to achieve the goal ... what will be the positive impact. How much do you want it?

* Don't fight it - If we accept that The Quitting Zone is a natural phase then there is no need to struggle with it. Choose to pass through with ease. Know that this is temporary and your journey WILL get easier again.

* Celebrate - Take time to celebrate how far you have come. The Quitting Zone is so tempting because we usually forget how much we have already achieved. Write down what you have already accomplished, what obstacles you have overcome and use these to fuel your confidence as you make the last steps towards success.

* Engage Support – Seek out friends, family, a work colleague, mentor or life coach. When things feel tough, it's essential to have other people to give you encouragement and to help you keep focused on the ultimate outcome.

* Keep Moving Forward - One step at a time. Before you know it you will have passed right through The Quitting Zone.

Do You Have Self Doubt?

Before we get into today's article, I just want to announce that the current issue of The Realgoalgetter Ezine is now online. Have a look.

Do You Have Self Doubt?
By Graham Harris and Julie Harris

Do you doubt yourself and your abilities? What is it that you feel you cannot accomplish? What is it that you want to achieve but feel you can’t? Whatever it is, as we enter 2006, now is the time to do it. Now, in 2006, is the time to overcome that which is stopping you from progressing and move forward.

How?

By learning to believe in yourself and build your confidence. But before we start: what is your inner critic saying now? What is that inside voice saying to stop you from progressing? The inner critic has a dynamite grip on our daily lives. S/he wants you to stay the same. Doesn’t want you to change so uses such phrases as:

You’re not good enough

That will never work

You could never do that remember the last time you tried?

You’re not clever enough

What you. What makes you think she/he thinks you are attractive? What does your inner critic say that stops you from progressing? Now make a list of all the things it says. Go on just try, what have you got to lose?

In our experience most of the critic’s power comes from generalising from one example. So what you failed one. Well we’ve got news for you; failure is not the end of the world. Everyone has survived failing at something.

What is the end of the world is thinking that trying something and failing means you can’t do it. You are a failure.

Trying something and failing means: Well done. You’re on the road to success.

Don’t you see, the outcome is irrelevant, what is important is the fact that you had a go.

All that is wrong is that you have given the wrong part of the process power. If you focus on the end result, not achieving means failure. So, therefore, your inner critic can now undermine and sabotage you whenever it wants to.

If you focus on the fact that you made an effort to do something you had never done before and congratulating yourself for that, irrespective of the outcome, the critic has nowhere to go. S/he cannot use your actions to distract and undermine your progress.

All overnight successes have spent years perfecting their act. Do you think they just did it once and were a great success? Remember that phrase your grandmother kept repeating to you time after time as a child:

Practice makes perfect.

She was saying the same. It doesn’t matter if your first try was successful or not. Do it again and again. The next time you can do a bit more and a bit more. Each time you have the confidence to try more.

Let me give you an example. We live in a Spanish speaking country. When we first went shopping we chose the supermarket so we could select our items and pay the cashier without talking. We didn’t have the confidence to try and our inner critic said, ”You are too old to learn a new language”.” You can’t learn a foreign language, you tried at school and failed”.

Then over time we ventured into other grocery shops where you have to speak to the owner. Gradually we have learned to ask for what we want and have a short conversation with the shop owner. We don’t understand every word but we are more confident that we can understand what is being said and become involved in the conversation.

You see we are progressing irrespective of our inner critic because we have actual proof that practice makes perfect. Proof that the more we make the effort the more confident we become. We have broken the code. We have found the secret ingredient. Confidence breeds confidence breeds confidence breeds confidence. It’s not the outcome that matters. It’s the fact that you had a go. Next time it will be easier.

Go on have a go.

Good Luck

Graham and Julie

Time Slows For No One

On the Clock
By Susan Ryder

Time is relative, and how we relate to time changes as we go through our lives, dependent upon our circumstances.

For the young, time either goes by too slowly or too quickly in relation to what's going on in their lives. Time literally seems to drag if one is waiting for the bell to ring on the last day of school. And it flies by in an instant if one is finally spending a long-awaited day at Disneyland (for which the waiting FOR seemed incalculable before it arrived).

As we get older, time tends to spend itself too quickly most of the time. But as with the young, the speed by which our time seems to advance is also affected by circumstance.

For instance, I can remember putting numbers on our calendar in August a few years ago, counting the days until we would go to Maui for a long-saved-for ten year anniversary trip. I began the numbering at 143 days, and it seemed as if the very act of writing those numbers on the calendar made time stand still, if not stop completely.

But once we arrived in Maui, our 10 days there went by in the blink of an eye, and before I even totally got over my jet lag, we were home. In fact, once we arrived Maui I knew the time would fly by, and so by the second day I was already mourning our departure, which was still eight days away. Know the feeling?

Having said all of that, the reality of time is that it DOES pass, and whether or not it seems to be ticking by slowly or at the speed of light ~ the moment a second passes it's gone forever and cannot be returned to us. Time is a precious commodity, not to be wasted.

Now I may differ with some folks about what's considered to be a "waste of time." For instance, I don't think staring out the window watching cardinals at the feeder is wasting time. Nor do I think watching television, going to a movie, or surfing the Internet is necessarily a waste of time.

Something I do consider to be a waste of time, however, is binding oneself to the past or fixating on the future, instead of living in the present moment.

We measure our lives by time, by how many years have passed since this, and how many days are left until that. And many of us waste that time on regrets about the past and worries about the future, myself included, even thought it's obviously foolish to be so consumed with either the past or that future that we miss out entirely on the present.

If we waste precious time regretting past events or situations, in particular ones we cannot go back and change or make amends for, or if we spend inordinate amounts of time worrying about things in the future that may not even happen ~ then we miss out on a lot of living. And I'd suspect we know that in our heads, whether we are actually able to practice it or not.

Having said that, it's equally foolish to pay no attention to lessons from the past, or be attentive to the requirements and realities of the future. If we don't learn from history, we are told that we are doomed to repeat it, as seems to be played out regularly in world events.

And it's silly not to pay attention to or have some practical foresight about our future. We get vaccinations against the possibility of contracting a disease, and if we are able, we start retirement plans to help us be financially viable after we stop working ~ both help us anticipate the reality of future scenarios.

But we all know that we are capable of going overboard at times, worrying about the future or staying stuck in the past. So some of us need to try to find a balance between attending to the lessons and requirements of time, both past and future, without giving up the ability to live in the present, which those lessons and requirements make possible in the first place.

What do I mean by that? Well, I'm not the same person I used to be when I was, say, 21, so what's the point of fixating on things I did when I was 21, drowning in regret or guilt? Sure, that person is still part of me. And yes, if there is any way to remedy a situation from the past by seeking out someone I may have harmed by making amends, then certainly I should try to do so, if it's not too late.

But whether or not I am able to do that, the reality is that I am more than my 21 year old self ~ I am the sum of all my parts. And if I let myself get stuck living in my regrets about my 21 year old self, it robs my 41 year old self the opportunity to live fully now.

Likewise, if someone gets so wrapped up in trying to make sure that everything is perfect for when they retire, they risk missing what's going on now. That can happen by pinching every penny now so that not one red cent is spent on pleasure or anything extra, and all of it is saved for the future (of which there is no guarantee anyway).

Or it can happen when a parent's obsession with work and making money is to the detriment of his or her relationship with their growing children, time which they can never get back, but for which, of course, he or she can redeem if they pay attention to it now.

Speaking from my own experience, it seems to me that we can get so caught up in the regrets, guilt and missed opportunities of our past, and/or in the hopes, needs and fears of our future, we miss the wealth of our present. Thus we need to make a decision about our attitude regarding what time owes us or what we owe time, about how time enslaves us or how we can be free of time.

Because ultimately, we have the choice between either making time our ally or our enemy, of whether or not to benefit from lessons learned, or to allow ourselves to be bound to mistakes that need no longer define us. In that place of balance, we can live in the present moment with a sense of appreciation and fullness, releasing the ghosts that haunt us in both our past and our future.

Lasting The Distance

Lasting The Distance
By Adebola Oni

One evening in the summer of 1968, a few thousand spectators remained in the Mexico City Olympic stadium. It was almost dark. The last of the marathon runners were stumbling across the finish line.

Finally the spectators heard the wail of sirens on police cars. As eyes turned to the gate, a lone runner wearing the colours of Tanzania staggered into the stadium. His name was John Stephen Akhwari. He was the last contestant to finish the 26-mile, 358 yard contest. His leg had been injured in a fall and was bloody and crudely bandaged. He hobbled the final lap around the track.

The spectators ROSE and APPLAUDED him as though he were the winner. After he crossed the finish line, someone asked him why he had not quit. "My country did not send me 7,000miles to start the race. They sent me 7,000 miles to finish it." He replied.

A lot of us start things we do not finish. We stop at various stages of the project, race or endeavour. It could be anything from insufficient funds, to running out of money being abandoned by the people we started with, being rejected by prospects or someone we went to sell the idea to, being told off by a judge or colleagues. It may be that we are discouraged by someone who does not share our vision or we simply lose interest.

If we could only see our lives and all that we undertake in it as the Tanzanian, Akhwari, saw the race. At times it's not about winning gold, it's about finishing BECAUSE God did not put us on the earth to just start the race of life and commence all the projects and ideas He gives us, He put us here and gave them us to FINISH THEM.

We can only hope and pray that in all we do hereafter we would be like the Tanzanian, Akhwari, and finish our races, even if we do not know whether the stadium would be full when we arrive.

This is to your success.

Set Goals, But Avoid The Pitfalls

When Goals Fall Flat
By John Eliot, Ph.D.

Not but a month ago a gentleman named Henry came to visit me in my office at Rice. He was in sales – a tall, fit, attractive man wearing a crisp pinstripe suit with a bright, eye catching tie – clearly successful. His visit was unannounced.

"Excuse me, Dr. Eliot," he said in a professionally polite manner as he knocked on a hinge of my open door. "Might I steal a moment of your time?"

I motioned in, inviting him to have a seat as I fired off a last minute e-mail.

"If you're busy, perhaps I can come at a better time?"

"Not at all," I told him, swiveling my desk chair in his direction to focus my attention. "What can I do for you?"

"Well, it's kind of a long story…" he began, to which I propped my elbows on my desk, leaning in with interest. I'm always up for a good tale. Besides, the foundation of my career is listening to people – really listening. Henry relaxed a bit. He announced that he'd just finished reading my most recent book, Overachievement (Penguin Portfolio, 2004) and it couldn't have come at a better time.

"How so?" I inquired.

"Dr. Eliot, I'm a pharmaceutical rep. for Pfizer – a good one. In fact, last year I was the number one leading producer in the United States. But I'm not happy. I'm miserable. I go to every Pfizer function religiously, I volunteer by mentoring younger sales reps, my boss thinks I walk on water, I've been taking night courses here at the Jones School to work toward my MBA, my résumé is the best in the business… but it just doesn't matter. It's killing me."

Henry then reached across my desk, thrusting his wrists toward me, palms up as if tied together: "You've got to help me get these handcuffs off!"

He was exasperated. Here was a man making, pardon my rough calculation, a couple million in annual commissions, yet desperately seeking help. Odd? Actually, quite common.

As we talked at greater length, I discovered that Henry had fallen into the trap of relying on Goal Setting to navigate his career and define his success – to define him.

I see it in every line of business: bright, talented men and women who've had success or are working toward their next achievement but are stuck in the office 15 hours a day, who don't spend enough time with their kids or take vacation with their spouse, who don't enjoy hobbies, who don't exercise or eat right.

They get caught up creating and checking off to-do lists for all of their personal and professional responsibilities. They're socially rewarded for their diligence or conscientiousness, but they long for a sense of freedom… even a mere few minutes would be a reprieve!

Goal Setting, as a tool, has its utility. More often than not, though, in my work with top executives, surgeons, artists, and athletes, I see people held back by Goal Setting, people unsatisfied with their career, out of balance between work and life.

The reason? Goal Setting has five significant downsides when it comes to happiness, exuberance, and a true sense of fulfillment:

ONE: PERFECTIONISM

Goals, by definition, are ideals – where you want to be and how you're going to arrive there. The disconnect is that the real world gets in the way. Plans and schedules are never absolute. Clients and colleagues change their minds. Weather rolls in unexpectedly. Politics emanating from Washington shift after an election. The economy rises and falls.

If you ascribe to goal setting to set your course, it's easy to lock yourself into too narrow a definition of success. Write your goals down and review them feverishly every single day and you'll miss opportunities, I guarantee it. Think of the billion dollar products on the market that were mistakes, that weren't planned out or systematically engineered, or weren't intended for greatness: Post-it Notes, Silly Putty, the microwave oven, Newman's Own foods, Velcro, Teflon… the list is a mile long.

There isn't one path to excellence. In fact, the most successful people in this world twist along pronouncedly convoluted paths. In doing so, they also learn that success and perfectionism are not synonyms. For most, thinking that there is such a thing as perfect is a sure way to impede growth.

TWO: IMPATIENCE

The famous achievers in history share a number of psychological traits in common. Vision is first on the list. They can stretch their minds to look at existing problems in fresh an interesting ways, breakthrough ways; they can see through details, obstacles, and setbacks – loads of them. The rest of our population is stuck in the minutia.

When you orient your time and thinking around a list of goals, by definition you pay more attention to the details. You constantly assess how much work is left to reach an end point, how close or far you are from your goals – you evaluate far too much.

Frequent comparison between where you are at this moment and where you’d rather be is not vision; it’s impatience. Real vision is confidence, problem solving, understanding the bigger picture, not delaying happiness until you attain a certain measure of prosperity. Excess goal setting, in turn, doesn’t lead to vision, it leads to increased frustration.

Take a baseball player, for example. If he sets a goal of hitting .400 for the season, he introduces pressure to monitor his “progress”. Is he batting .380? How many more hits does he need to raise his average? How many more turns at the plate are left? Years of sport science research has shown that kind of thinking to be deleterious to on field production. Constant evaluation ties performers up in knots.

THREE: THINKING IN THE FUTURE

A funny thing about true visionaries: they don’t actually spend much time thinking about the future. Contrary to popular conception, they aren’t idealists always mentally wandering into fantasyland. Yes, they can see well down the road, but they use that ability to keep their motivation strong. When they arise in the morning, as they brush their teeth, they think of great things to come. When the fall asleep at night, it’s to content musings of the enjoyable day ahead. And, when they run into roadblocks, they remind themselves of their potential.

In between those brief moments, they actually have no idea what the future will bring. If you interrupted them at work, asking for predictions or odds, you’d likely receive a confused stare, or a retort: “Why are you bothering me with such nonsense, can’t you see I’m busy?” Busy thinking in the present, that is.

Top level performance happens when you are engrossed in the moment, absorbed in the thrill of what you are doing.

Mozart once described the art of writing music as child’s play. An interviewer, assuming him to be conceited, questioned the statement: “In other words, you’re just that talented?” No, replied Mozart, concertos become art when you lose yourself in the process, like a child stringing cranberries onto a thread, one at a time, not paying attention to anything else going on around them, least of all their mother calling them for dinner.

If you want big accomplishments, unwavering happiness one of them, you need to spend a significant portion of your work day absorbed, moment to moment, in the present. Goal setting takes you out of the present.

FOUR: OUTCOME ORIENTATION

I often find myself explaining the science of motivation to my clients. Let’s face it, on any given day, there are an enormous number of distractions to derail our momentum. There’s no doubt: sustaining motivation is key to success.

So what is the driving force that keeps us juiced? Intrinsic value not extrinsic reward. A gold star on your report card, cashing your year end bonus check, moving into the corner office, a Porsche in the driveway… they certainly seem incentivizing. But they don’t hold up day in and day out; they don’t generate sustained motivation. If you place a carrot at the end of your health club’s treadmill, it may propel you the first time you go for a jog. Before long, though, you’ll say, “Screw this; I’m going to Starbucks.”

I know, a metaphor silly to be sure. The lesson, however, is that outcomes – byproducts of our effort – can’t hold our attention to nearly the magnitude of internal rewards: the real meaning of what we do, purpose, resonance we feel when executing something the right way or for the right reason.

To that end, it is FAR more effective to focus on the process, not what you might be given if the process goes well.

FIVE: EXCESS PLANNING

The fifth downside of goal setting is reduction in work altogether. Simply put: elaborate goal setting designs, like those espoused in psychology textbooks, take hours to build, and even longer to implement. How often do you hear of sales forces or executive teams flying off for three and four day retreats… to redefine their goals, to complete “productivity” seminars? It tends to be a lot of wasted time.

Instead of pouring yourself into work that you enjoy, work that will translate into results and make a difference, spend your time writing down goals, monitoring them, reorganizing and reprioritizing them, entering them into spreadsheets and Palm Pilots. Where will you end up? No need to answer that question.

Goal setting is at it’s essence planning. The more energy you put into planning, the less energy you put into execution.

As we say in sports, “Champions get after it.”

So ask yourself, are you going to transform your work and personal life with perfectionism, impatience, daydreaming, sweating after a dollar, and planning to re-plan? Or are you going to be like Henry and ditch the handcuffs?

Embrace Your Overall Vision

The article today really describes how a vision for your life may be knocking on the door of your mind and how important it is to listen when it does.

It hit me just right when I read it the second time, I love to hear about someone's personal life journey. This is real stuff and it is nice to know that we are all in the same boat! We all look calm on the outside but there are usually furious under currents at work below the surface.

Embrace Your Overall Vision: It May Be Hiding in the Strangest Places By Catherine Franz

Thinking back on it, my lifestyle change journey really began about eight years ago. But I didn't become aware of it until about three years ago when I consciously decided I needed to lead a "lighter" life and started by cleaning out the medicine cabinet.

It seems so simple now, but it took three months before I could let go of the contents of that 14 x 16 inch space. Every time I went in that cabinet, a more honest assessment yielded more trash. Soon it became easier to be honest about the clutter of my life, at least the old stuff.

Memory stuff was not so easy -- things my parents gave me, my ex-husband, old boyfriends, friends -- I'm sure you get the picture. Of course, the kids' stuff was the hardest. But practice does make perfect, and in time I was able to make hard choices about what was really important to me.

Slowly but steadily over the next three years I conquered the rest of my house -- purging and cleaning every corner, cabinet and room.

Happy with what I'd accomplished, by fall of 2005 I was ready to focus on other life shifting goals. It was as if cleaning out the medicine cabinet and the rest of the house was the catalyst for other, bigger changes.

And the messages to make changes were all around me. Early in November 2005, I started hearing them. "It's time to really shift." I heard Dr. Phil, television's well-known therapist, say whenever I clicked on his show.

I didn't watch him very often but when my intuition said tape it or turn on the tube, I did, and there was the same message, "If it isn't working for you, change it." The timing was always impeccable. Of course, he expressed the message in different words.

But even with these coincidences, I heard the bold words but didn't take any action. Then the messages started bombarding me. Small, soft, large and loud. They kept coming. In early December, while in a meditative state, I heard it.

This time very clearly, very direct AND very, very loud, and firm. "Its time to really commit and get bold. Its time to reinvent yourself, Catherine."

All I could do was give a throat chuckle. The message scared the heebie jeebies out of me. Over the space of the week my feelings transitioned into, "Okay, I'm open, what do you mean by that?" I asked even though I had a good idea what it meant. The vision of selling everything and changing my environment to be much lighter, more Zen-like.

I've needed to lose a lot of weight (that was always a goal). But this time it was different, it wasn't the weight at all. It was, "Get healthy. There's a lot in store for you, and you need to be healthy in order to get there."

The picture got clearer as each week progressed. Key items appeared, I got nervous, questioned it, mulled over it, ran and tried to hide for a few hours from it, shared my doubts with my best friend, Brenda. The doubts faded but my lack of trust in myself didn't totally go away. I kept wanting all the answers. I want to know exactly what I was to do and how to do it.

The New Year is here now and I know what I need to do, although I still have no clue of what it all means. The thoughts of measuring up to the vision is still a little nerve wracking. Doubts come and go but only when I really don't want to eat healthy or exercise.

One step, now, is all I can focus on. Eat healthy now. Exercise now. Sell one piece of furniture now. Its replacement will come. I know all will come at the right time. And I think that is the only thing that keeps me in the "now" of working towards wherever this "reinventing Catherine" message is leading me.

I hold on to the vision that has been there for the last few months as I really like its picture.

Yesterday, I spent some time working on my 2006 Attraction Board. It had been in the works since early November but the pictures weren't clear. Yesterday, while in the craft store things began to mesh.

This week I plan on test-driving new cars, deciding on which one I like, and placing its picture on my Attraction Board so that the universal laws will bring it to me.

When messages come of steps that you want to take, allow yourself to go through the emotions, but don't get stuck in the feelings. Keep the door open because the message you receive may only be a partial picture.

If you block it because it seems too big or impossible or unimportant, then the next message, the one that explains it or gives it additional clarity, won't get through to you. Even profound decisions often mask themselves as many simple choices -- like cleaning out a medicine cabinet -- and only take a few moments to make.

So be ready. Keep the doors open to the possibilities and listen -- messages can come from the strangest places -- a television program, a child, a piece of music, a memory or your own behavior. It really isn't difficult. It is a decision though. It is a choice.

Discussion

What potential message are you receiving that you dismiss before really investigating what the message is telling you. Our visions do not always come to us ready made and crystal clear.

Sometimes we have to interpret our mind's work, I mean really think about what our sixth sense may be saying to us. Sometimes it takes weeks if not months to clarify what is the right road for us.

Take some time this weekend to listen to your mind's work. Stop and record possible significant directions or hints of a more joyful, passionate future.

See you next issue.

It's Your Dream . . .

I don't know if I have ever published this article in the Blog but "It's Your Dream" was the first article I ever wrote for publication.

If you have already read this please forgive me, but it does have timeless information, so here it is.

It's Your Dream - Are You Using The One-Two Punch?
By Al Smith

Have you ever noticed? There are some people who seem to know exactly what they want and how to get it. They move toward their targets with precision, and appear to achieve easily without goals or planning. They have a narrowed focus and motivation, reasons for doing what they do. They don't even have a set of written goals, yet they move through life attaining what they go after.

Then, there are some of us that need the strategies, the written goals and plans of action, and great role models to follow. Neither is good or bad, right or wrong. There are just different needs for different people. This article is for those of us who need the latter.

What's your dream? What goals do you have? What is it that you absolutely must have, or do, or be?

There are two steps that are supremely important to getting what you want in life.

Step One - Have you defined specifically what you want? Choose a goal that inspires you to go for it, a goal so large that when you get it, you automatically get all the other things you want in life. Have no conflicting goals, have all of them congruent with your definite major purpose in life. Make the chase exciting. The momentum will literally pull you forward to your goal. You will be on Autopilot! One Focus To Success!

Is it a car, a boat, a house, a travel vacation, a summer cottage, a great job, a new business, a relationship, a close family, more friends, better health, more energy, lose weight, run a marathon, have great clothes, make more money, be rich, just get the bills paid every month, be debt free, have more confidence, be happy, play pro sports, go to the Olympics . . . ? You know what you want, don't you?

What do you want? Will it stretch you to capacity in order to get it? Do you have to improve somewhere? Are you excited about the prospect of having it in your life? Do you expect to get it? Positive expectation is vital to the achievement of your dream.

Do you seem overwhelmed, a little intimidated by the size of your dream? Unsure if you can do it? Many people that have attempted something great, have had their doubts at times. This is when powerful emotional reasons will blow you right on past these and enable you to take action again.

You can break it down into bite size pieces. Break it down into small actionable steps that will incrementally bring you to the desired outcome. Move forward daily and enjoy each small success. Decide to persist until . . . And you will get there! Remember that you can and you will achieve what you want! Only the timing and the strategy may vary. Believe and know this is true.

Step Two - Whatever it is that you want, you must want it with all your heart. it must be your 'want', not someone else's. There must not be any conflicting feelings. By the way, logical reasons are helpful, but emotional reasons are absolutely the most powerful. If you have enough Why, the How will take care of itself! You will move mountains to get there.

"Your reasons why" must move you to action. It must make it easier to go for it than not. They are what will drive you when times get tough. Have a bunch of them! You must sell yourself on your goals' merits. You must "fall" in love with it. Have you been, or are you in love with someone? If so, then you know that your mind is occupied constantly with your love. This is the feeling you must cultivate in order to get what you want.

You wake up thinking about it, you go to bed thinking about it, you think about it all day, how you can do more, be more, have more, give more, etc.

Sell yourself and Sell hard! If you can't come up with good reasons, then make up some reasons to go forward. Act as if and soon you will believe what you tell yourself. Your body will become congruent with the dominant thoughts you keep in your mind. Remember that you can only focus on one thought at a time. Make it the one that will spur you on. You have direct and absolute control of your thoughts, if some negative sneaks in, feel it, evaluate it, and then move on.

These two steps in the goal making process are absolutely vital to your successfully achieving what you want. By spending the proper amount of time on them, you will be light years ahead of the average person, and you will find that getting what you want seems almost effortless. Invest as much time as you need to crank up the desire to a white hot, burning obsession. Do not move onto the next step until you have powerful emotion behind your decision. You will love the Journey. Good Luck!

-----------------------------------------------

Action Step

Clarify What You Want and Turn Up The Volume!

Take out a clean sheet of paper or use your journal if you keep one. Pick one thing that you want to have in your life, Start small, but make it something that up until now has eluded your grasp. Be specific. Write it down.

Why do you want this? Write down all the reasons you want and need this in your life. Brainstorm, write rapidly everything that comes to your mind. You can edit later. The more reasons you can come up with will determine to a great extent how voraciously you go after what you want.

Keep this paper with you and review it several times each day. Add more reasons as you come across them. Feel how badly you want and need to have this! Think about it constantly, and continually remind yourself that you will do whatever it takes. Take as much time as you need to gather as many reasons to push forward.

Then, do this exercise with another goal. Make sure that your goals are in alignment with each other, and build momentum when put together.

When you have enough reasons internalized and your desire burns hot, then, and only then, move to the next step. PLANNING

See you next issue.

Achieve Your Goals Every Time!

The Top 10 Steps to Set and Achieve Your Goals - Every Time!
By Philip Humbert

It’s been said that everyone has goals, whether we know it or not. We have goals to keep our current job, or to get a different one. We have goals to save for the future, or to travel, take a vacation, or purchase the things we need and want to make our lives more enjoyable. An important distinction, however, is that top achievers are very intentional and focused on their goals, while many of the rest of us are not.

Top achievers know that the wording, structure, timing and format of a goal can make it’s achievement much easier – or far more difficult. Top achievers understand the basic skills for setting and reaching their goals, every time! They know how to design goals that create success. Here are the 10 most important steps to set and achieve your goals:

1. Reachable goals are SPECIFIC. Top achievers know that to reach their goals, the brain must know exactly, precisely, what they are trying to accomplish. Never word a goal with vague terms like “some” or “a little bit”, or “more”. Be specific! If you want to lose 8 pounds and reach a weight of 175, specify those exact numbers. If you want to save $200 this month, be exact. Your brain can help you accomplish almost anything if it knows precisely what you are aiming for.

2. Reachable goals are SIMPLE. Many people describe their goals in complex terms of retiring on the beach in Hawaii, with nice cars and lots of money, and…. Their list goes on and on. Any ONE of those things is a great goal, but the combination becomes over whelming and the brain gets confused. If you want to retire in Hawaii, just say so! If you want to increase your sales by 10% this month, say so! Keep your goals simple, clear, and focused.

3. Reachable goals are SIGNIFICANT. No one can muster the enthusiasm, hard work and courage to reach a goal they don’t really care about. A reachable goal is one you really, really, REALLY want! It’s something that will change your life, enhance your health or wealth, and make you proud. It gets your juices flowing, gets you up in the morning, and keeps you going all day long, because it is important! Set goals that are worth achieving!

4. Reachable goals are STRATEGIC. High achievers know that the best goals accomplish many great outcomes, all at one time. Running a 10K race will almost certainly: 1) feel great! 2) help you lose weight. 3) lower your cholesterol level 4) strengthen your heart 5) lower you risk of heart disease 6) increase your energy and stamina, and 7) improve your outlook. Design your goals to strategically impact as many areas of your life as possible. You’ll have more reasons to reach your goal and more excitement when you do!

5. Reachable goals are MEASURABLE. A goal without a measurable outcome is just a pipe-dream. You can’t achieve a pound of “happiness” or 6 inches of “self-esteem”, but you CAN get a new job. You CAN run a mile in under 7 minutes, or do 100 sit-ups. Someone has wisely observed that, “What gets measured, gets done.” Define your goals in terms of height, weight, dollars, inches, or hours. Then measure your progress until you achieve your desired outcome.

6. Reachable goals are RATIONAL. To reach your goal, you will need a plan, a path, and a vehicle for getting there. Your goals must make sense! When you explain them to friends and family, your goals should create excitement, draw support, and encouragement. Your goals should be just out of reach, but not out of sight! You want to stretch to be your best, not strain after impossible dreams. Set goals you CAN and WILL achieve!

7. Reachable goals are TANGIBLE. Choose goals that you can see, hear, smell or touch. Go for things you will enjoy and that you can clearly visualize. The brain has hard time going for “financial security”, but it can visualize a bank statement with nice, large numbers on it! Define your goals in terms that excite the senses, then go for it with all your heart!

8. Reachable goals are WRITTEN. High achievers always know precisely what they want, because they’ve written it down. Often, they write a short description of their goals every single morning, as a personal reminder of their priorities and their objectives. The act of writing your goals down vastly increases your chance of success. Write it down! Then, keep your notes where you can see and read them every day.

9. Reachable goals are SHARED. We are far more likely to stick to our plan and reach our goals if we know our friends and family support us. Being part of a team increases our determination, our stamina, and our courage. Caution: Never share your goals with anyone who may ridicule, tease or discourage you! The world is full of doubters and you have no time for them. But, find a support team, a group of cheerleaders, and a coach who will encourage you every step of the way. High achievers count on and work with other winners!

10. Reachable goals are CONSISTENT WITH YOUR VALUES. One of the biggest reasons people fail to achieve their goals is that they have conflict between their behavior and their values. However, when your values and your goals are in agreement, there is no stopping you! Clarify your values first, then set simple, specific, measurable, tangible, written goals that are consistent with those values. You will achieve them, every single time!

Create What You Really Want

Create the World You Really Want
By Robert Higginson

We live in an amazing time. A time when the worlds of science and religion are coming together with the worlds of psychology and sociology to help us to understand how the creation process works. And once we understand that process, we can create the world of our dreams. Do you dream of great wealth, or romance? What about improved health or athletic abilities?

Some people call this process the Law of Attraction. Others call it the Law of Deliberate Creation. Whatever you call it; this process is how everything is created. And if you don’t learn how this process works, then you will create your life by default, meaning that you end up creating a life that you don’t want.

The first thing that you need to understand about this process is that thoughts are things. And not only are thoughts things, but they are very powerful and very important things. In fact nothing is ever created without starting out as a thought.

So we need to start thinking of thoughts as powerful forces of energy that can travel at the speed of…well at the speed of thought. Have you ever had the experience of thinking of someone, and just as you are thinking of them the phone rings, and it’s them, on the phone? If you have had this experience then you have experienced the power of thoughts.

The process of deliberate creation consists of 3 basic steps. The first step is to become very clear about what it is that you want. This sounds easy enough, but many people find it to be the hardest step. Step 2 is to experience the feeling of already having what it is that you want. This seems backwards to most people. For example, most people feel that they will be happy when they have money, when in fact, feeling happy first will actually attract the money. And the third step is to allow things to happen.

So let’s go over each step in detail. Step one is to become very clear about what it is that you want. Do you know what you want? Do you have an image in your mind that is so clear, that when you see what you want you will recognize it instantly?

I really like the story of the middle-aged woman who sat down on an airplane next to an attractive older man. As she sat down, the woman turned to him and said, “Excuse me sir, but I just have to tell you that you really look a lot like my third husband.” Then after a moment of silence, curiosity gets the better of him and he asks her, “Well, how many times have you been married?” She smiles, and replies, “Twice.” Now there is an example of a woman who knows exactly what she wants, and recognizes it when she sees it. In fact, I’ve been told that is a true story and that they did in fact get married.

Now let me give you a hypothetical example of someone who thinks he knows what he wants, but really doesn’t. Suppose a guy wants a new car. So he goes into the car dealership and tells the salesman that he wants to buy a new car. Of course the salesman is going to ask him WHICH car he wants. But what if he says that he wants any car he can get. The salesman will then explain that he can’t write out a sales agreement for “any car.” The man will have to decide which car he wants. This may seem like a silly example, but let me ask you again, what is that you really want?

One of the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to the law of attraction is that they focus on what they DON’T want. Now the law of attraction basically says that what ever we focus on, we get more of. But the problem is that our minds can’t process the concepts of “not”, “no” and “don’t.”

When I speak in front of groups I like to demonstrate this principle with the following exercise. I tell them that for 5 second I want them to concentrate as hard as they can on NOT thinking about Pink Elephants! Then I look at my watch as I shout, “no pink elephants, no pink elephants!” Obviously, the more they try not to think about pink elephants, the more they are thinking about pink elephants. Then I demonstrate that the best way to not think about pink elephants is to choose something that is not a pink elephant, and then focus on that.

I use pink elephants as an example because that is not something that people normally think about. But with that example in mind, you will soon be able to see examples all around you of people attracting what they don’t want. For example, suppose a young woman complains that all the guys she meets are “losers!” And that she feels like she has become a “loser magnet.” What’s the solution? She should decide exactly what type of guy she DOES want to meet, and imagine meeting just such a guy.

Another example: suppose a friend tells you that their biggest fear in life is “Bankruptcy.” And that they think about that every day! How can you help them to avoid bankruptcy? Again, the answer is for them to choose something that is NOT bankruptcy and focus on IT. Perhaps they could focus on what their life would be like if they got a raise, or were offered a better job at twice the salary. Those things are definitely not bankruptcy.

And that brings us to the next step in the law of attraction, or the law of deliberate creation. Once you have a clear idea of what it is that you want, you must experience the feeling of already having it. Athletes do this all the time.

I love the story of the Olympic ice skater who was interviewed as he walked off the podium after having received a Gold Medal. The interviewer asked him to describe the feeling of having the Gold Medal placed around his neck! His reply was that it was no big deal, because he had already been experiencing that feeling for months! His comment may not have made for a great interview, but it is a great lesson in how to win a gold medal.

The final step in this process is to allow good things to come into your life. This may seem so obvious that you not think it worth mentioning. But I have found that people, who have yet to achieve major successes in their lives, don’t really understand how this works. The best example I can think of is one a friend of mine told me about.

My friend is extremely successful and has made millions and millions of dollars. And one time after a speech he had given, someone from the audience came up to him and made the comment, “Wow, you must really be driven!” My friend told me that the comment bothered him. As if the person making the comment was suggesting that his success had come as a result of his working harder, or putting in more hours, than other people.

And after much thought, he decided that his success had come not as a result of him being “driven” but he had been “drawn” to success. In other words, he had such a clear vision of the things that he wanted to achieve that it was almost as if that vision drew him in.

And there you have it. That is how you create the life of your dreams. I urge you to make these three steps a part of your daily life. Once again; here are the steps. First, figure out exactly what it is that you want, then experience the feeling of already having it and then allow it into your life. I know that this process seems simple, but don’t let it’s simplicity fool you. This is the process of creation.

I would love to hear your success stories. You can contact me at robertsmap@comcast.net

Make the Most of Your Time

Five Questions That Help You Make the Most of Your Time
By Rodger Constandse

Questions have the power to instantly change your focus and put you into a productive frame of mind.

These five simple time management questions will immediately direct your attention, your focus, and your thinking towards your top priorities and away from distractions.

Just ask yourself these questions habitually throughout the day and you will start making better use of your time.

1. What is the most valuable use of my time right now?

This is a slight variation of a question developed by time management expert Alan Lakein.

The purpose of this question is to shift your focus to what is most important and valuable at this moment. It is a perfect question to ask whenever you are unsure about what to do next, whenever you face an unexpected interruption, or whenever you feel that you are not making good use of your time.

For example, let's say you find yourself with an extra twenty minutes of unscheduled time. Asking yourself "What is the most valuable use of my time right now?" will help you find an important task for the time you have available.

2. What am I ultimately trying to accomplish?

The purpose of this question is to focus your thinking on your real objectives and goals; the real reasons you are working on your projects and tasks.

Asking this question habitually will help you avoid getting sidetracked, drifting into trivia, or falling into perfectionism. You can use this powerful question for all your projects.

For example, while preparing a presentation, you can easily get sucked into less valuable work when you start playing with the formatting, or adding bells and whistles, instead of working on the content.

The work seems important because it is connected to your presentation project, but when you take a closer look, you realize that you are wasting your time on details that don't really matter.

Asking this question will help you refocus your efforts on your real objectives and away from trivial matters. If it turns out that the formatting details are important for this project, you'll recognize this as well and give them the attention they deserve.

This question can also help you find and eliminate useless tasks that don't contribute toward your ultimate goals.

3. What am I giving up to do this?

Whenever you choose to do something, you automatically reject everything else you could have done during that time.

The purpose of this question is to help you realize what you are giving up in order to undertake a task or project. Once you recognize the true cost of an activity, you may decide that it is not how you really want to spend your time.

Asking this question before you take on a new task or project will help you stay focused on what really matters. It will also help you recognize when you should be saying no to that new request.

You should also ask this question about activities that you are already doing on a regular basis. These could be things like volunteering to do some work for your trade association, chairing a committee, or serving on the board of a community organization.

While all of these things may be valuable undertakings, you may be sacrificing something even more important to do them. Asking "What am I giving up to do this?" may turn out to be a real eye opener.

You probably wouldn't consciously sacrifice time with your family in order to participate in a committee you don't care about, but you might be doing it by default if you don't examine your existing commitments on a regular basis.

4. What are my three most important projects or tasks today?

The purpose of this question is to help you make use of the 80/20 rule every day. The 80/20 rule states that 80% of the value is contained in only 20% of the items. The top two or three projects and tasks in any given day could account for up to 80 percent of your day's value, so give them the time and priority they deserve.

If you practice weekly planning, you can change this question to "What are the three most important projects for this week?"

5. Should I continue doing this?

This is a slight variation of the first two questions, but shifts the focus toward what to stop doing rather than what to start doing.

Deciding to stop doing something that is no longer valuable is often more important than actually deciding to start doing something else.

This is a perfect question to ask whenever you feel you may be wasting time trying to perfect something that should already be done, or when you feel stuck in a commitment that is no longer serving your long-term objectives.

Keys to Success

* Make it a habit - At first, you'll have to keep reminding yourself to ask these questions over and over again. However, if you keep asking consistently, eventually they will become a habit that will serve you for the rest of your life.

* Use these three steps whenever you have to make a time management decision: pause to think before you react, use questions to put you in the right frame of mind, and do the right thing.

* Keep asking until you get an answer - Sometimes you won't get an answer to these questions right away; just keep asking while you review your projects and task. The right answer will come.

Vision Points The Way

Before we get to today's message, I read this quote this morning in a Brian Tracy newsletter. It really hit me as to how many professionals turn things around at the last minute, and how we can too.

Think about these words, does this describe you most of the time? If not, why not?

"My greatest point is my persistence. I never give up in a match. However down I am, I fight until the last ball."
– Bjorn Borg, tennis champion

And, here's another timely goal setting tip I found on a blog I frequent. Have a look. Time Leadership. Take five minutes and read '7 Goal Setting Activities' and his goal exercises take approximately 40 minutes. Also remember Jim Estill has built up a huge company from the ground up and has proved his mettle.

The article in today's issue is written by a member of the first Jamaican Bob Sled Team ever to enter the Olympics, and almost no one took them seriously. If you have seen the movie "Cool Runnings" with John Candy you will better appreciate how much vision they really had. By the way, if you have never seen the movie, check it out. Very Inspirational. Now to our feature article On Vision, and remember this man walked his talk.

What's Your Story?

What Story Are You Enacting?
By Steve Davis

How much of your life is directed from the foundation of unexamined mythology? What if we are all enacting some sort of story in our lives?

Now what do I mean by story? I mean that we have some vision, set of ideas, or beliefs about ourselves that define us as a central character, in what could be called a "myth" or "story" that we're living out. All of the elements of the story have been either passed down as part of our culture or upbringing, intuited, or simply fabricated in our own minds.

We then go about enacting our stories as if they they were true, thus embodying the script from which we live our lives.

So now you may say, "yes I can certainly buy that, I'm very well aware that we are a product of our own thoughts and beliefs. So what's the big deal?"

The big deal is this: The vast majority of us don't know that we're enacting a story. We actually think this is real life that we're living! (see the movie Matrix for a great metaphor). By real life, I mean that we're approaching life based on a set of assumptions that aren't necessarily backed by good evidence.

So when you don't know that you're enacting a story, you are completely at its mercy, with little control over the role you play and the course your life takes.

Now to make matters even more complicated, in addition to enacting our own individual stories, we are also part of stories which are bigger than us. We are enacting stories within our relationships with individuals, and the groups we are involved in, such as our families, work groups, community organizations, our countries, etc. Even our civilization itself is acting out a story, much of which we may not even be aware of.

Humans tend to enact whatever story we choose to adopt as our own, and will settle for the best one available. If we don't take the time to create a better one, we'll continue enacting our current story, even if it isn't working for us.

What story are you enacting and is it working for you?

Here is a simple exercise to uncover your current story:

1. Discover your story.

First, assume you are in fact enacting a story - if this is a new concept, it certainly won't hurt to give it a chance. Based on this assumption, uncover the elements of your story. Be a detective, hunting for clues. Look at all your behaviors and describe them piece by piece, until the "whole" story emerges.

2. Evaluate your story.

Now assess your story. Are you happy with it? What would you change, remove, or add to this story to make it more satisfying? Re-write your story - become the author of the grandest story you can envision - a story that truly inspires.

3. Tell your story.

Share your new story with important people in your life. Talk about your specific role in the story and why it appeals to you. The more you talk about your new story, the more it will become a part of you.

4. Rehearse your new role.

Commit to living your new role in some way. Make at least one change that is in alignment with the new story.

5. Explore how your new story fits into the bigger story of your family, organization, corporation, country, and world. What contribution can your new individual story can make to your bigger story? Explore any obstacles presented by this bigger story and refine yours if necessary so that it isn't overpowered or subverted by the bigger one.

If you are a facilitator, coach, consultant, trainer, etc, I encourage you to use this exercise to help you clients re-write their own stories.

Remember, you are the authors and you can write your story any way you wish. You're only limited by your imaginations!

Make Up A Goal List

Lifetime Wants and Desires
By John Halderman

Do you know all the things you want to have, do and be in life? Have your listed them? Not too many people do, but it's interesting, of the people who accomplish a lot in their life, most all have a list.

Though the years I have noticed that most highly successful, adventurous and accomplished people have a list of all the things they would like to do. And most of them did not know how they would accomplish all the things on the list when they initially wrote them down, yet they do it.

There is magic in a list of this sort; the people who do make a list eventually come up with ways to accomplish much or all of their list. And those who do not make a list usually don't even try to figure out how to do something. Even if you think about something it is not nearly as powerful as when you start by writing it down.

This looks so simple, so why don't many people do this? There are several reasons: You don't think about it. No one ever told you about doing it. Why list things that are clearly out of your means? I don't have any experience in those things.

But I bet you do have some things that you still think would be exciting, rewarding, fulfilling or just fun to do. We all do, but generally we push them aside as unattainable.

Make a list for yourself now.

Here's what to do and what not do when making a list.

Do:

Think big, Dream big, Imagine money and resources were no object, Disregard perceived skills needed, Time is of no concern, People you want to meet, People you want to do something with, Something you have always wanted, Places you want to see/go, Activities you want to experience, Challenges that are calling you, Accomplishments you seek, Records to set, What you should have done before, No restrictive reasons, Think you are worthy

Do Not:

Consider worry or fear, Consider doubts, Consider current situation, Consider knowledge or skill, Consider education or position, Consider social status, Consider your opinion of self, Analyze how, Listen to naysayers, Be 'reasonable', Be 'logical'

OK, you get the idea, let's get to it.

First, do a brain dump. Write down 100 things as fast as you can. Just write whatever comes to mind quickly, abbreviate. However many you get down is good. Skip about 4 or 5 lines between items to allow room for step three.

Second, keep the list handy and look at it at least once a day for a week, adding whatever comes to mind.

Third, After each item write how you will benefit from accomplishing each item. Is it personal satisfaction, fulfillment, serving others, whatever you feel about it? What emotional feeling would be attached to its accomplishment? This helps support the item with reasons why, which is more powerful in your mind.

Setting into your mind the desire to do this will activate your inner thoughts. For some people it may take a while for some of the things to surface. Particularly if they have been emotionally buried deep in your mind.

Then, look at the list at least once a week, daily is better. Read it over; think about what it would mean to fulfill each of the items.

Say to yourself, 'what if I could. . . ?' Don't allow negative critical thinking to come in, just dream and enjoy the possibility for now.

Pick out one or two that you think you may be able to accomplish. What can you do right now to move towards it? Even just a small step, I can just be learning more about it. Do whatever you can at the time to move towards at least one item.

Look at the list on a regular basis to keep the ideas active in your subconscious.

The reason why you have not moved towards any of them up to this point is you have not formally stated them as desires. In the past you may have even negated the idea of attaining them.

Don't close the door on any possibility, if you can't see yourself stepping out tomorrow to do something, let it be. Don't negate it forever, let it be a possibility that some way, somehow you can.

I'm not going to guarantee to you that they will magically come to be, but remember, the people who write down their wants and their goals get more of them than those who don't.

Having great goals attract more energy than do small ones. Set your sights on grand ideas that are exciting, glorious, support personal growth, assist others, and expand human potential. Let your emotions get involved.

Protect your ideas, feelings and energy, be careful about sharing your grand ideas with people who are likely to negate them and any possibility of your accomplishing them. Only share them with people who you know to be supporting of big dreams.

You get what you expect to get, so expect big things. Plant the seeds of grand ideas, keep nurturing them while paying attention for messages and opportunities to move closer to them.

Keep it up, read your list often, and imagine how it will feel to accomplish each one. Remember, your personal development is your responsibility, become active in your growth every day because you're worth it.

Success Secret - Daily Practice

The Success Secret of Daily Practice
By John Watson

Practice may seem to be a very obvious 'secret' of success in most walks of life but it is often anything but obvious because the practitioner seems to do his or her thing so easily and spontaneously. They appear to be so talented that they can improvise brilliantly without the help of rehearsal.

On closer examination, the performance is far from easy. It follows hours and hours of daily practice and rehearsal.

Recently Lilia Kopylova won the BBC's 'Strictly Come Dancing' program partnered by England fast bowler, Darren Gough. She made her performances seem easy. She also achieved miracles in teaching Darren to be a competent partner.

However, Lilia has been training every day for years. She began dancing when she was nine and initially trained in Ballet, Gymnastics and Ice-Skating (which she began aged four and went on to become a Moscow champion in figure skating). It is no wonder that she can put in stunning dance performances.

Darren, had much less time - a few months - in which to learn to dance but he put in hours and hours of concentrated practice with the added benefit of Lilia's tuition.

Recently Robert Ringer has written a brilliant article on the power of 'orchestration' i.e. detailed rehearsal and practice.

He is a great speaker himself and has noticed how other great speakers give apparently flawless performances which appear to be the result of natural ability. He has realized, however, that these great speeches are anything but spontaneous.

He was so impressed by a speech by Zig Ziglar that he went to listen to him again. He was amazed to hear that the words and sentences were exactly the same. So was the body language. He also noticed that Anthony Robbins has his own sound man at all his speaking gigs. Speech and sound are carefully coordinated.

I heard Robbins in London at his fire walk seminar in Docklands. I, too, noticed huge banks of sound equipment at the back of the hall with a sound man always in charge.

Robbins appeared spontaneous and dynamic but he must have rehearsed his speech and delivery with his sound man many times before he finally appeared on stage.

Some performers have so much natural talent that they think they can get away without practising. However, they are taking a big risk. Practice can make a natural performer great. Lack of practice can make him or her look mediocre.

The above gives us all hope. Someone without natural ability can give a presentable performance if they practice enough. They can even appear talented. Practice can almost create talent.

I have often noticed in the martial arts that the people who practice regularly and with determined effort can put in competent performances at their grading.

They can focus all their energies on the required moves rather than on wondering what they should be doing next.

As they increase the speed of their well rehearsed moves, they can even begin to appear talented.

I have seen talented performers floundering because they had not put in the necessary practice.

People who worry about performing in public should stop worrying and start practising. Daily practice can work miracles and can create its own talent.

Create A Brand New You!

Ten Tips To Create A Brand New You! Part One
By Chris Green

1. First and most important of them all, is the attitude to how you approach your new life. Realize that from this point on, you start with a clean slate. Whatever has happened before no longer matters. The past is the past, it has been and gone so leave it behind you.

Now is the time for a fresh start. Accept that whatever happens from this day forward is your responsibility. It’s solely up to you to take the necessary action to create the changes you desire. A new, happy, exciting chapter is about to unfold. No going back!

2. Change the way you start each new day. Rise one hour earlier and go for a walk, a swim or workout. You could also listen to a motivational audio CD, checkout www.nightingale-conant.com for details. Another good idea is to vary the breakfast meal each day: cereal, yoghurt, fruit, toast, continental, so that breakfast doesn’t become a mundane routine.

3. Fancy a change of image? If you’re not sure about the styles and colors that suit you best, visit an image consultant. Use Yellow Pages to find one in your area. You could also have a change of hairstyle, have a tattoo, a body piercing or get a tan. But try not to overdo it, either in the sun or on a sunbed.

4. Drop any destructive habits. Smoking, excessive drinking, junk food are the obvious ones, but there’s other habits that can seriously restrict your quality of life. Procrastination – continually delaying taking action – is one.

Resolve to take action to bring about changes you want. Watching too much television is another. Television is the biggest thief you will encounter in your life. If you let it, television will rob you of over 100 non-productive hours every month. Control how much TV you watch and do something more productive instead.

5. Develop an appetite for learning and start a course. There’s hundreds to choose from: Computers, languages, design, crafts, art, astronomy, psychology, literature, technology I could be here all day with subjects! As well as courses in schools and colleges in your locale, you’ll also find thousands of courses being run over the Internet. Whatever subject you’re interested in, you will find a course for it online.

However, if you can attend a course at a school or college, you’ll get out of your home and you’ll meet new people. And there’s nothing to stop you doing both, especially now that you’ve restricted the amount of TV you watch! An extension of this is to start a new hobby: learn to play a musical instrument, stamp collecting, bird-watching, model railways, amateur dramatics, renovate a car or a house, you get the idea I’m sure!

Give these 5 a try over the next month, there’ll be five more exciting ideas for you to continue your regeneration next month!

Chris Green is the author of the new book “Conquering Fear”, a special program which will show you how to conquer fear and attract greater happiness, success and prosperity into your life. You can learn more about this new book and purchase it at http://www.conqueringfear.net

Ten Tips To Create A Brand New You! Part Two
By Chris Green

6. Plan a weekend adventure. Make it something BIG, something exciting and something you’ve never done before. Some ideas for you to consider: A hot air balloon ride, white water rafting, a survival course, a cattle drive, climb a mountain, scuba diving, whatever you can think of. What’s great about this is the feeling of accomplishment. You’ll bring rich experience into your life and have a lot of fun too!

7. Are you a lonely heart? Maybe you’re still looking for “the right one” or maybe you’ve just come out of a relationship. Either way, it’s time to go and get them! Have a good think about what you want from a relationship. Do you want a serious relationship or just fun?

Once you know what you want, try some of these ideas to get a sexy new partner: speed dating, Internet dating, dating agencies, singles nights – there’s lots of ways to meet someone new, make sure you use as many as possible to give yourself a winning advantage. Abandon your prejudices and fears and go and get what you want! NO FEAR!

8. Treat yourself to a pamper day. This is a day where you escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday living and enjoy some stress-free time. You’ll also feel great and give your well being a huge boost. On this day, have a light workout, a swim, a sauna, a Jacuzzi, a steam room. A massage would be nice and if you have access to one, a Turkish baths will give you an invigorating experience. Try to do this at least once a month, it is an excellent stress-buster.

9. Out with the old and in with the new! Clear out all of your old junk, especially anything that reminds you of painful or sad events from your past. A couple of good ideas here would be to have a garage sale or to donate it all to a charity. In this way, you don’t just throw stuff out, you make a contribution for others to benefit from.

Once you’ve had a good clear out, give your living space a makeover with new furnishings and accessories. You’ll get plenty of ideas from the myriad of lifestyle magazines now available.

10. Finally, three books that will help you continue your regeneration, They’ve had an amazing impact on my life and I’m sure they’ll do the same for you.

Awaken The Giant Within by Anthony Robbins
Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz
Wishcraft by Barbara Sher

And there you are, ten great ideas to help create a new you! Please try them and I wish you everything from life you wish yourself.
