Prioritize and Plan Your Work Schedule

Face it, you are spending more time at work than at home. You bring work home with you and you think about it about 75% of your time.

This is a common problem. We live in a work-oriented society. The more we work, the more money we have to pay bills, get things we need, and purchase things we want. That necessarily isn't a bad thing. It is necessary that we work to earn a living. BUT it isn't okay to allow work to replace your family.

Did you know that society is built on stable, strong families? REALLY! Once the family starts to go down the tubes, the society does too. Civilizations have crumbled because of the breakdown of family life. We don't want that to happen. So, how can we make a living and yet, stay close to what is important to us - such as our families?

Prioritize

Prioritize your life. Write down on a piece of paper or on your computer a list of roles that you take on in a given month. Then - with the number "1" as most important and "10" as least important, prioritize your roles.

This doesn't mean how much time you invest in them at this time either. Prioritize them by how important they are to you.

Here is a sample list:

  • parent

  • spouse

  • employee

  • sibling

  • child

  • manager

  • fellow worker

  • neighbor

Now - prioritize them:

  1. parent

  2. spouse

  3. child

  4. sibling

  5. employee

  6. manager

  7. fellow worker

  8. neighbor

Plan

Now is the time for you to plan your time. Think about how your work schedule is preventing you from focusing on your priorities.

Ask yourself:

  • Is there a way that I can work at home - for instance, telecommute?

  • If that isn't possible, then is there a way that I can shuffle things around at work, for instance, delegate some of my tasks to others to that I can have more time with my family?

  • Am I really using my time at work efficiently?

  • Do I have a daily planning routine - where I plan my time, my roles, and focus on my goals (both personal and business)?

  • Can I talk to my boss to see if there is something that we can work out that is mutually beneficial so that I can spend more time at home?

By sitting down, and really thinking about potential ways to spend more time on what matters most to you - WHILE still making a living, you can usually come up with some winning ideas.
