Why 95% Fail . . .

Why 95% of All eBay Sellers Fail
by Todd Reese

eBay is now the 8th most visited site on the internet and it has just one purpose - sales. With 40 million visitors per month most eBay sellers are missing a golden opportunity. They are missing the opportunity to cultivate long term clients. It is a proven fact in marketing that you will continue to buy over and over again from people and companies that you know, like and trust.

Yet 95% of all internet marketers fail when it comes to eBay. Most are looking for the fast buck. They have completely miss the opportunity to use eBay as a lead generation tool. They miss the opportunity to create a list of people that will be willing to consume your products over and over again.

Lead generation on eBay can be accomplished in several ways. The most popular way is by using the self liquidating ad. A self liquidating ad is one that pays for itself. In other words your customer directly pays your advertising costs. What they purchase from you is really some form of advertising.

Let me give you an example of a self liquidating advertisement. Recently I saw in a magazine an ad for a pair of sunglasses. The ad claimed that the sunglasses were free. You just have to pay the shipping and handling costs. My guess is that the advertiser probably isn't making much if any money on the sunglasses. But they also aren't losing any money. The shipping and handling most likely cover their actual costs.

What they really want is something far more valuable - your contact information and your "permission" to market to you. In other words they are looking for qualified prospects - prospects that are interested in the products and services they are selling. Once this company has your contact information and "permission" to market to you, they will begin to establish a relationship.

They will do this in a variety of ways including sending you ads for other product and services you may be interested in. Over time most customers will be worth many times more than their initial purchase. Since eBay is purely commerce site it is a perfect place to do a self liquidating ad. Let's look at an extreme example.

Let's pretend that you own a car dealership that only sells high end sport cars. We will assume that your average car sells for $65,000. One way you could use a lead generation self liquidating ad would be by "selling" a special report. For example you could sell a report on eBay entitled "18 Ways to Drive the Car of Your Dreams for Less Than the Cost of a Yugo".

An ad like this would get some attention, especially from people who are interested in trading up to a high end sport car. The report is really nothing more than an advertisement for you. Of course you would have to write a report that had real content and offered up ways for the consumer to really do as the title suggests.

A report like this however, would cost you literally nothing to produce - except your time - and there would be no overhead, no inventory, and no headaches. Since this report would be nearly all profit you could set a low "Buy It Now" price ($4.97) to attract a huge number of prospects. The revenue generated would easily offset eBay's seller fees. In the report you could suggest several real ways for people to drive a luxury car for little money.

You could also list in the report resources for them to research. For example the resources could be dealers that know how to work special financing deals or specialize in selling high end sport cars below market value. The resource you suggest would of course be your own car dealership! The report did not cost you anything to produce and it fully paid for it's own ad costs with each person that ordered.

The person buying the report is more likely interested in what you have to offer and are therefore partially qualified. Anybody that contacts you after reading the report is a fully qualified prospect and should be marketed to aggressively. Once you have their name and contact information you could send them a weekly "hot sheet" of cars that you are trying to sell.

Once they purchase you could then sell them accessories and branded clothing. If they were close to your shop you could sell them on servicing. And the list goes on and on. If you study eBay there very few people using it as a lead generation tool. Yet lead generation and specifically self-liquidating advertising is a proven winner.

Almost every type of business can benefit from lead generation advertising. If done correctly lead generation advertising can actually become another source of revenue for your company. Look at eBay as more than just a fast buck. Look to eBay as a way to create long term clients. eBay if worked properly can be your best source of fresh leads and can really explode your sales.

Where Does All the Time Go?

No wonder we never have enough time for our business operations . . . So what have you been sacrificing?

Where Does All the Time Go?
By Mia LeCron

It is quite surprising when you sit and think about where all the time in one day goes. Twenty four hours is really a lot of time. But on most days it scarcely seems enough. But this is because of certain misconceptions about time.

Let us proceed to carefully examine where all that time goes and find out if twenty four hours really is. For that I have listed out certain points which will help you to get a realistic view about how much time you really have in a day.

Point 1
We do not really get twenty four hours in a day. Maybe it's because we always talk about the twenty four hours in a day, we get the feeling that we really do have twenty four hours to finish our daily business and the fact is that we do not. Assuming that you hit the sack at least by twelve in the night and taking for granted the fact that you need at least seven hours of sleep; let me fix your waking time at seven in the morning.

That means that you have already lost seven hours, which we can deduct from twenty four, giving us only fourteen waking hours. Waking hours does not mean the hours you take to wakeup but the hours that you are awake. So let us get that straight, we have only 14 hours in a day. Now if you think that all those fourteen hours can be used for productive work, you are wrong again. For we come to our next point.

Point 2
The fourteen waking hours cannot be used completely for productive work. There are many things that a human being should do in order to continue to live like a human being and some of theses things do take up a lot of time. Now the following list that I have drawn up is sure to vary from person to person. But I have taken the times for each action on what I felt to e reasonable times as far as any normal human being is concerned.

Taking a shower
Most of us take a shower at least once in a day and the time I think we can put down for that is ten minutes. For those of you cleaner ones who shower twice a day put that as twenty minutes.

Answering the call of nature
Oh yes, we are all very cultured people who have the best of manners and upbringing. We dress ourselves properly and conduct ourselves with the utmost poise. But there are several times in a day when we have to go back to nature and summing up all those things we do in the bath room I think a good half hour should be enough.

Getting ready and tidying ourselves
When we move about in society definitely we have to look our best and adding up all the minutes that we spend in front of that mirror, we get another ten minutes. For some people of course, this figure comes up to half an hour. But I think ten minutes is good enough.

Eating
We need to eat to live and though I accept the fact that people have different eating habits and times, I think that and I'm sure doctors will agree with me that a person needs three meals a day and should take at least ten minutes to ingest a meal and not just gobble it down. So that makes it 30 minutes for food.

Time to relax
Please do not raise an argument now. I promise to deal with this bit later on. But right now I would like to put down one hour as the time to relax, and this includes the time that you get to yourself for prayer or meditation or just to stare out of your window or perhaps the few extra minutes that you spend in your bed after waking up, waiting for the last traces of sleep to go away.

Time with family and friends
Please we are human beings, aren't we? And we certainly cannot get along with our business of life without chatting a few minutes every now and then with our friends and the family too. So with your permission, I would like to deduct another hour from your waking time.

So now what do we have left for business?

We started off with 14 hours of waking time. And we proceed to add up all the time that we accounted for in the above mentioned points; let us see how much time we have left for productive work provided we still want to exist as human beings.

The activities mentioned above would take when put together a good three hours and twenty minutes. That is 3 hours and 20 minutes. I put it down in both numerals and words so that you can get a real taste of the figure.

Now if we proceed to subtract this figure from our 14 hours of waking time, what do we get? We are left with just ten hours forty minutes. In figures that is 10 hours 40 minutes.

And that is a fact. That is all that we get. So from now on don't you think that it would e more realistic to say that we have just ten hour and forty minutes to accomplish a day's work and not twenty four hours. For if we continue to believe that we have twenty four hours, then we are in effect deceiving ourselves.

But wait there is more to this story than meets the eye. I hate to disillusion you but these crucial hours that we have painstakingly added up are not really put to constructive use. There are certain things called time waster which you have to look out for and that is what we are going to deal in my next article.

Blog for Internet Presence

Blog First for an Internet Presence
By Paul Jerard

Remember when advertising was limited to expensive ads in print. I came from that field and clients paid thousands of dollars to claim their market share. Printers worked overtime to keep up with impossible deadlines and increasing demand.

A few years ago, I was looking for a service in the Yellow Pages. My son found the service faster than I did, by using the Internet. At the time, I was spending some serious cash on the Yellow Pages for local advertising. I was sold into the idea that “break even” advertising was fine because of repeat business.

Business owners from my generation, and the generations before, had accepted the idea of investing in failure. We even had a formula of “cost per information call,” to justify investing, in advertising, that would not show a profit for months or years.

However, how many ads can you write in print and afford to break even on your expenses? Most “mom an pop" businesses invest their hard earned money and look forward to, a much needed, immediate “return on investment.” Why else would they advertise in the first place? Small businesses are looking for instant results.

My son had enlightened me about the accessibility of Internet advertising, but I was really new to the idea. Shortly afterward, I sought out an Internet advertising guru. By luck and fate, I found Corey Rudl and IMC. Later, I was coached by Corey’s mentoring program.

For the first time ever, you can advertise for, very little or, no money at all. A web site can cost $100 to $200 per year depending upon the host and what kind of package you need to get started.

If you do it all yourself, you won’t spend anything else. You must still work to optimize your site, for the search engines, and if you hire "outside" it won’t be cheap. A "top notch" search engine optimization (SEO) expert won’t come cheap either, and some of the inexpensive (SEO) services will get you “black listed.”

With a website full of unique “keyword content,” it should take you about five months to see big changes in your rankings with the major search engines. This is a conservative estimate, but getting top 10 rankings with Google, Yahoo, MSN, or AOL requires skill, content, and time.

However, Blogs can get you ranked very fast. Due to the constant changes and adding of copy that is keyword rich you can establish an Internet presence in much less time. On top of that, you don’t have to know HTML or be an SEO expert.

Some Blog services like Blogger are free, and since Blogger owned by Google, it is well worth your while to open an account. All you have to do is make entries a few days per week. If you have a lot to say – more keyword content is better.

If you are a small business, refer to your services, products, changes, and your geographic location, in your Blog entries. This will point prospects toward your Blog. When people are searching for your niche market in your area, you will be listed within your niche.

Blogs work in harmony with a web site, so you should still get a web site and have your Blog link to your company website and have your website link back to your Blog. This is a great way to let potential customers see the changes that happen in your business and feel your passion for it. When your new customers meet you, they will be much more informed and comfortable, with you.

A powerful Blog, with unique and keyword rich content, serves as a "magnet," and may draw more customers than your web site does. The bottom line is, you don’t have to spend a penny on advertising with your Blog.

Goals: Direction is Important

Priority and Goals: The Importance of Direction
By Brook Noel

When seeking out a goal, it’s important to completely understand where you are, what obstacles you have been battling, and what strategies you can use to overcome them.

Identifying goals and priorities is vital to a successfully balanced life. A few years ago I was keynoting at a mental health conferences in Washington state. I asked the roomful of professionals to find a pen and a piece of paper and answer the following question within 30 seconds: What are the three driving motivators (priorities) for this season of your life? Amazingly, only five-perfect of the attendees were able to complete the task.

Most people have been asked to do this at some point — either in school or at work or as part of a self-improvement program. Still many people get flustered when the topic of goals comes up. Fear of setting goals too high, fear of commitment, and not knowing what course to chart are just a few reasons people shudder at the concept of goals. Yet goals remain an important part of the value system.

Imagine leaving Los Angeles with the instructions to go to New York. Obviously, it would be easier to accomplish this with a map. Without a map, the trip would be nearly impossible, or require much more time and effort than the simple process of purchasing a map. Goals work the same way. They allow you to identify where you are and the path to get from one point to the other. The most common pitfall of people designing goals is the failure to use their designs as a map.

When goals are recorded and then set aside, this is as useful as putting a map in your glove box, yet expecting to know which road to take.

Goals need to be consulted regularly, just like a map, and if you get off course, you need to re-evaluate and make a new plan. To design a goal map, first identify an area of your life where you seek advancement. Use that area to work through the goal process that follows.

For this example, I’ll use the goal of starting a part-time business for extra income. Here are the steps needed to make the map.

Identify the exact goal. In one sentence, clarify the goal you are aiming to accomplish as specifically as possible. Example: To open a part-time tax business that brings in $300 a month in extra income (gross).

Identify a completion date. My business will be established in eighteen months.

Identify the evolution of the goal. What major points and steps happen during this time period?

A. The basics of establishing a business, permits, licensing, updating certification, financial.

B. The marketing and announcement of the business.

C. The grand opening of the business. Using this evolution assign each major step a date.

Fill in the blanks. Now take an in-depth look at what is needed to get to point A, from point A to point B, etc. Write these steps down in specific detail and assign each a date.

The basic template construction of your goal is complete. Type this up, print it out, and keep a copy in your planner. Check your progress against this goal regularly. If you get off track, don’t give up, just sit down and retrace your steps, adjusting the plan as necessary.

Double Your Business Now!

Developing a POWERFUL 30-Second Elevator Speech That Could Double Your Business By Alan Boyer

First let me tell you what NOT to do. Don’t talk about you, don’t talk about your products.

In as short a statement as possible tell them the measurable results you deliver, and who you deliver them to. Then shut up.

Don’t try to tell them EVERYTHING in one breath. Tell them something that is so powerfully grabbing that they just have to ask you for more, and even then when you respond keep it short, keep them asking for more.

So, how do you do that?

Here is an exercise I do with all of my clients that usually changes not only how they present themselves, but often it goes so deep that it changes their vision of who and what they are as an entire business.

Take out a sheet of paper and create 4 columns. Consider this activity as brainstorming, a work in progress, that will continually change not only as you work your way through it this time, but should get you thinking so that you will continually come back to the worksheet to make the answers better and better over the next few weeks.

So, for your first pass, don’t worry about getting “the perfect” answer, just get something down on paper to start the thinking process. You’ll come back later and make it better and better.

The first column, far left. Products, services and/or features.

List your products, services and/or features down this column. For most people this has been what you have been telling the world that you do or sell. It’s going to change, believe me. List each and every one.

The 2nd column to the right. Benefits, why buy the product?

For every item in the column to the left, directly across from each one write what the benefit of buying that product is. Think more in terms of bottom-line results. After you have written down why someone should buy the product ask yourself why someone would even want whatever it was you wrote down there. Keep asking your self why, why, why until you’ve gotten down to the real bottom-line of why someone should buy your product.

The 3rd column. Why buy the product from me?

For most of my clients there is someone just like them on every street corner. Just imagine that you are standing on a street corner with hundreds of other people. They all are wearing the same clothes, same height, same skin color, same hair color. You’ll be lost in that crowd. Your job now is to find what makes you so different that you will be “the first” person seen when a stranger walks up to that crowd. And, eventually we’ll want people to come to THAT street corner looking for just you.

At this point, take your best shot as to why someone should want to buy from you. Again, this had better be about results that someone will get from YOU. Just get something down. Then ask yourself why would someone want this and keep asking why this over and over until you’ve gotten the right answer. After we’ve answered the question in the fourth column, you’ll probably come back and change this or make it even better.

Caution: Don’t make your advantage about price, that is a losing proposition under almost any condition, you’ve got to find something better than that. In fact that is likely to make you like most of the others on that street corner.

The 4th column. Measurable results.

This is where the rubber meets the road and where you will find the most powerful statement for your marketing, and for your 30-second elevators speech. Looking back at the benefits of the product, and the advantages of working with you, turn both of them into measurable results (not activities….RESULTS).

This is when I hear the grumbling from a client. “You mean I have to tell someone exactly what result they will get from buying my product? You’re asking for an awful lot. I just can’t guarantee the results people will get from buying the product.”

Yes, this requires a commitment. A commitment to do exactly what you said you’d do. A commitment that many are not willing to commit to.

If you can’t come up with an answer, you’re in the wrong business. If you can, you will be the first person that anyone sees in that crowd on the street corner.

Consider the measurements and how you will present them. Write down some measurable results: average, maximum, minimum. You can state a fact that a customer typically gets ___, or, you guarantee a minimum result of ______, etc. The first part of this is stating very clearly what you have done, what you will do, or what you’ll guarantee.

Making your results measurable gives a very visual perceived value for what you do. People buy you or your product based on the value they perceive you will deliver, so help them find that value and make it so visual that they don’t have to guess. No one else on that street corner is doing that. They have been selling a product, a service, of if they have sold a benefit it has been vague. You will stand out, your sales will catapult.

It wouldn't hurt to go back to "Why buy the product?" and "Why buy it from me?" and revise it. Usually once I've forced a client to come up with those measurements, the benefits of the product, and even the benefits of working with them start changing. So, review, change, and go through it again. Get out there and use it. Over the next few weeks keep looking for the ideal measurement, and come back to revise over and over. It'll keep getting better.

When I give my 30-second introduction at a chamber event, or other meeting, I will have people run up to me after the meeting. “How do you do that?” “You can’t really do that…can you?” I even have people weeks later who see me around town run up to me to ask me about what I said.

My elevator speech is:

About 80% of my small business clients double in 3-4 weeks. Would you like to double yours? I work with struggling businesses to help them stop struggling in weeks, and multiply their business. I take them by the hand to guide them through that maze of obstacles that have been holding them back, to help them find the breakthroughs that catapult them to unseen levels. What are your obstacles?

Don’t hesitate to play with what you say at networking events. Try it one way and watch the results. If you are a BNI member, or a chamber member, those are ideal places to try this out. Measure the results of your elevator speech by

The noise level of the room after you say it
How many people approach you after the meeting
How many approach you whenever they see you in the future.

Change the words just a little at different meetings. Keep track of the ones that work the best, and watch your business grow over the next few weeks.

It will change your business in more ways than just this. You’ll probably change your vision about who you are or who you can become.

Alan Boyer, President/CEO of The Leader’s Perspective, LLC is considered one of the world’s leading breakthrough specialists. He has worked with some of the worlds largest companies, on projects in the multi-billion dollar area, and with single proprietor companies.

He has worked on many hundreds of projects with companies that have resulted in multi-$100 million savings or gains. With over 35 years of business, quality, and process experience, he has catapulted businesses lightyears ahead in weeks. Some have doubled and some have jumped 10 times. He claims the key to that is:

Helping the business owners/employees develop the business skills
Helping them overcome the limitations and attitudes that they built between their ears (the self imposed limitations, I can’t, this won’t work for me, I’m different)
By helping them find the breakthroughs in their business and thinking
He helps companies worldwide reach further and faster than they EVER thought possible.

ACTION is Most Important!

ACTION is More Important than Knowledge!
By Damien Senn

It was Albert Einstein who stated that 'imagination is more important than knowledge'. Now if he had been addressing a room full of entrepreneurs, I hazard a guess that he might also have extended this quotation by saying that 'action is more important than knowledge too!'

Make no mistake, if you want to make your mark on this world as an entrepreneur you have to consistently take ACTION! Not only that, you will also need to have the ability to inspire other people into ACTION as well.

Learn by taking ACTION!

In our modern society we gravely underestimate the value and importance of experiential learning. We have become conditioned to mistake qualifications for competence.

As an entrepreneur, most of your learning will come from experience generated through taking ACTION. There is no text book, no seminar and no guru that can replace the value of you having an idea and taking ACTION on it.

Don't let a lack of knowledge stop you from taking ACTION!

Often what holds us back from even trying is our perceived lack of knowledge. Word's to the effect of 'I can't set up a business because I didn't finished high school' or 'I can't start a business until I've got my MBA'.

If you have spent any time at all studying entrepreneurs you will find a lot of them don't actually have university degrees. Often it is this simple fact that motivates them into pursuing the entrepreneurial path!

Continually Self Correct!

When you take the experiential approach to learning and developing your business, you need to be highly attuned to the feedback you receive from your operating environment. Be highly sensitive to feedback from your customers and clients. Establish mechanisms to monitor the results that you are achieving. Once these are in place, continually put pressure on yourself and your organisation to continually lift your standards of performance.

When you operate in this way you will not fear making mistakes as there are no mistakes only feedback.

Know what you don't know!

I heard a very successful (and to the point!) Australian trucking magnate asked the question "What kind of knowledge does it take to be successful in business?". He responded by saying that "If you know that you don't know, you'll be OK. But if you don't know, that you don't know, you're stuffed!"

As an entrepreneur, if you know you don't know something you can always ask someone who does. Remember that you do not have to know everything! Build up an awareness of the things that you don't know. Then surround yourself with people that can answer all questions you can't answer yourself.

What is the most important thing to know before you start a business?

The most important thing you need to know before you start a business is clear understanding of the special gifts that have to offer this world.

Once you have this awareness, ask yourself 'how can I share my gifts in a way that not only creates a better world for others but also enables me to live an extraordinary abundance filled life?'

Once you have that simply awareness…. you've guessed it… you're ready to get out there and start taking ACTION!

If you are then prepared to stand up every time you fall down you will magically begin to see your ideas manifest in the world.

Grow Your Business Fast

Welcome to the start of our business blog. Well, I guess this is not the start really. Up until now we have been posting on a blogspot server and finally decided that we should host this information on our own website.

Seeing as how I am self employed and have been writing my own paycheques since 1992, I figured I might have some info to share. Also, there are volumes of information I search through on the net to succeed at my own business so I thought I could bring you some of that also.

If you want to see what articles have been posted up until now, you can visit the old blog at:

Grow Your Business Now

I'll get this started as soon as we can set it up properly. Talk to you soon.
