Realgoalgetter Website Changes

The Realgoalgetter Website is still undergoing some changes. We are now just a few months shy of our 5th birthday coming up, November 2008.

The Realgoalgetter Ezine is four years old as of a few days ago, April 1st. The Realgoalgetter Blog itself was actually started in May 2004, so it is also almost 4 years old. We lost the initial blog information through some difficult technical problems and restarted in January 2005. C'est la vie.

Over these few months, we will present a new look and format, as well as an increase in goals and goal setting related information offered on site. We are presently testing different formats and themes.

We are still in the middle of deciding how best to go about these changes.

Hopefully we will be able to affect this with minimal disruption to the site itself. I apologize if some of the links get messed up during this period of time.

Please bear with us while we improve our site's resources, and thanks in advance for your patience.

Are You Taking Action? Yes, Talk The Talk, But More Importantly Walk The Walk!

Thinkers - Talkers - and Walkers - Where Do You Fit In?

I heard an interview a couple of days before I wrote this article where the guy being interviewed said “There are three kinds of people – thinkers, walkers, and talkers…” It made me stop and think and I believe the reflections are worth sharing.

In reality, there are probably more like a billion kinds of people on this planet. I’ve never been a fan of categorization and black and white questions about “what kind of person are you”.

However…

Sometimes we need to create results in our life. Maybe it’s business, romance, or just some personal need we want to fulfill in our lives but there are definitely times when we need to plan, execute, and measure.

So for purposes of those times in life when results matter, I think it’s fair to say there are three basic types of people:

First we have the thinkers. These are the day dreaming what-ifers who spend most of their time conceptualizing, making lists, etc. some of their ideas are great but most of the time that’s as far as they get in the creative process.

Being a thinker alone isn’t going to get you much in terms of accomplished goals. Planning and writing down what you want are great steps, but these tactics are no end in themselves.

Then there are the talkers. Talkers may or may not think before opening their mouth, but they are essentially a step above folks who just plan and make lists.

These types are very interactive about their ideas and objectives. Every time you see them they have a new game plan, and an even better idea that what they were talking about the last time you met.

But as they say, talk is cheap. Sharing ideas with others, brainstorming and networking for instance, can be an very powerful part of any process but if that’s as far as you take it well… it’s not any better than just keeping your mouth shut and making notes.

And finally, for the purpose of this exercise, we have the walkers. These are the action takers in life and the people who spend the time doing and not just thinking and talking.

What’s interesting is that sometimes people think, talk, and then act. But the first two steps are not always necessary.

In reality many times a “walker” will just get up and take action before they realize they had a winning idea on their hands. I’m not trying to downplay the value of making plans and getting feedback from others on your ideas, but if you had to choose from one of the three models illustrated in this article I’d push you toward being a walker.

Trust your intuition and take forward-moving action! Don’t spend all your time thinking or talking about something you want when right now is the best time to DO just about anything on your objective list.

I’ve thought, talked, and walked a good deal in my life but when I’ve been truly inspired and really wanted something with all of my being I have found myself in motion before ever taking the time to brainstorm or chat about the issue; just something to think about.

Overcoming The Beast Of Procrastination Once And For All

Overcome Procrastination: A Practical Guide to Beating Procrastination

If you actually follow some of the tips outlined below you will soon get things done.

Are You Bogged Down By Detail?

It's time to step back and take a look at the big picture. What exactly are you trying to do? Sometimes we get so caught up in the detail that we lose sight of where we are going.

Are You Overwhelmed?

If the task seems overwhelming - break it down into small do-able steps. Identify natural milestones along the way. If you want to lose 20lbs - aim for 1lb each week. If you want a tidy, organised desk - tackle it one drawer at a time.

If You Can't Decide What To Do

Do something - anything will do - the first thing that comes into your head. You will soon know whether you have made a good decision - you will know whether it's the right decision for you.

Give yourself permission to change your mind if it becomes obvious you are headed in the wrong direction. Doing something really is better than doing nothing - it will get you started.

Do You Lack Confidence?

Is your lack of skill real or only imagined? If it's in your imagination - acknowledge your fear and deal with it. Fears shout the loudest when they feel they are not being heard. Recognize your fear and create a plan to deal with it - the fear will soon lose its power.

If you need further skills - take steps to get them - ask for help. Take a few deep breaths and allow yourself to step out of your comfort zone.

Have You Got Enough Time?

It isn't always easy to find large uninterrupted periods of time. Try doing things in 15 minute chunks. You will be surprised how much you can do in 15 minutes - and it will get you started.

Are There Too Many Distractions?

You could decide not to answer the door or the phone for an hour. Take control and give yourself the gift of uninterrupted time.

Have You Got Too Many Things To Do?

If you genuinely have too much to do, say so - either to yourself, your boss, or your family, prioritize, enlist help and delegate.

Ask, "What is the most important thing to do right now?" Focus on that. Many 'urgent' things are not as important as people make out.

Is It An Unpleasant Task?

The longer you wait, the greater the chance it will go away or someone else will do it. By procrastinating you are getting a reward!

Do you really need to do it? or Could it be done less often?

Could you trade with someone or buy in help? If you really do need to do it - do it sooner rather than later. The longer you wait, the more energy you will spend thinking about it. It's much better to spend that energy actually doing the task and experience the reward of finishing it.

Finally, When you find yourself procrastinating, ask yourself what's so bad about what needs to be done? The anticipation is usually worse than simply doing it. Try allocating 15 minutes to doing the job and see where it takes you.

One thing's for sure - you won't be procrastinating any more.

"The hardest work in the world is that which should have been done yesterday." - Muriel Strode

Procrastination drains your energy - it truly is the thief of time. Plug the drain and begin what you have been putting off - you will feel better for doing it.

"The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one." -- Mark Twain

Which tip will you use right away? Now, get started.

Sailing To Success, or Are You Three Sheets To The Wind?

Three Sheets to the Wind or Sailing to Success

We have two options in life. We can be three sheets to the wind or sailing to success. Let’s look at the first option. The saying three sheets to the wind has its origins in eighteenth century British naval terminology. Sheets are ropes that control sails. The amount of sail, the angle of the sails to the wind, and the position of the rudder controlled three-masted sailing vessels of the day.

When a sheet is in the wind, the sailors have lost control of that sail. It lashes around in the wind, and the sailors lose control of their ship. Three sheets to the wind came to mean that a person has lost control of their faculties, presumably because they are inebriated.

Today most people are three sheets to the wind and don’t even know it. This is not to say that they are drunkards, but that they do not have a clearly defined vision of where they are going. They are caught up in the day-to-day at the expense of their big dreams and then wonder why they are not going where they want to. They have no ultimate goal or destination, so they are pulled and pushed by the vicissitudes of the life and tides of public opinion.

Option two is sailing to success. There are three key steps to sailing to success:

1. Choose a destination.

2. Chart a course.

3. Weigh anchor and set sail.

The first step is to choose a destination. Literally choose a destiny. Everyone is here for a purpose and finding your purpose, if you haven’t already done so, should be your highest priority. Think of a sailing trip: sailors have a destination before they set out. They might be going to Hawaii or Madagascar or points in between, but they know where they are going and have charted a course. You must have a destination.

When choosing your life destination, you might as well dream big dreams; in two to three years you can accomplish an itty-bitty goal or a huge dream. Have a goal or a vision you can be passionate about, something that will get you up in the morning. Each of us has a powerful wellspring within us just waiting to be tapped. You do not want to die with this life source still bottled inside you.

Jimmy Pattison, a Vancouver-based billionaire and entrepreneur who started out washing cars, said, “Those who dream big dreams also have the capability to achieve those dreams.”

You can call it a mission, a dream, a goal, a vision or anything else you want as long as you have one. Write down your vision and the date you want to accomplish it by. Leave your written mission statement somewhere that you will see it everyday—on your bathroom mirror, computer screen, or dashboard, for example.

The second step is to chart a course. This means making a high-level plan and strategy designed to take you where you want to go. You do this by breaking your big dream into smaller steps that are manageable and achievable. Decide who the people and organizations are that have the knowledge you need for success, and set a plan in place to meet those people and join those organizations, with a goal to acquiring that understanding. Just as a sailor charts a course around obstacles, so should you anticipate obvious encumbrances and create strategies to overcome them.

The third step is to weigh anchor and take action. Many people wait to be motivated before they take action—but it’s the other way around. Take action and motivation will follow. Every day, take one specific action that will bring you closer to your dreams. Look for the ways that day-to-day life, everything you do and think, can help realize your goals. Keep the vision of your dream emblazoned on the canvas of your mind, weigh anchor and set sail to your destiny of greatness.
